Heritage is a prized cultural commodity in the marketing of tourism
destinations. Particular aspects of heritage are often more
actively promoted, with others played down. The representation of
heritage in tourism as static and timeless, derived since time
immemorial from a distant past, is seductive. In Asia, a major part
of the tourism market lies in the sale and consumption of highly
orientalized images and versions of culture and history. In India's
marketing discourse, the state of Rajasthan symbolizes the nation
in its heritage-laden, traditional and most authentic form. These
images draw heavily on the British period in India - the Raj. In
one sense, this vision of Rajasthan is ennobling, highlighting
moments of cultural pride. In another sense, it demeans, by
omitting and obscuring salient features of contemporary life. This
fascinating book explores the cultural politics of tourism through
interdisciplinary perspectives. Carol E. Henderson and Maxine
Weisgrau demonstrate that tourism heritage privileges elite
histories that recapitulate colonial relationships, compelling
non-elites to collude in these narratives of subordination even as
they advance their own alternative visions of history.

Since 1955 when Dr. Paul Kirk first presented a bloodstain evidence affidavit in State of Ohio v. Samuel Sheppard, expert testimony on bloodstain interpretation has gained wide acceptance in U.S. courts. Scientific and Legal Applications of Bloodstain Pattern Interpretation brings together some of the most respected and noted experts in forensic science, the law, and bloodstain interpretation to provide a comprehensive overview of the discipline. It discusses research, applications, and the current view of bloodstain pattern interpretation within the legal system at the trial and appellate court levels, as well as scientific approaches and developments in the field. Scientific and Legal Applications of Bloodstain Pattern Interpretation will help attorneys who are questioning and cross-examining expert witnesses have a good working knowledge of bloodstain interpretation. Included is a full-color atlas of bloodstains, in conjunction with a glossary of terms and an outline of basic laboratory experiments that are commonly used in the discipline.
Among the outstanding contributions in this volume you will find: o An excellent chapter by Carol Henderson discusses the legal and ethical aspects of bloodstain pattern evidence in detail. o A post-conviction analysis by Marie Elena Saccoccio evaluates how bloodstain evidence can play a role in the appeal process.
Misinterpretation and overinterpretation of bloodstain evidence can occur in our courts of law-be prepared to effectively analyze the evidence and the testimony with Scientific and Legal Applications of Bloodstain Pattern Interpretation.
A man to rival a strong character drawn from fiction, author Carol
Henderson's great-grandfather was frontier Texas-born in the year
1860. Full of grit and determination, Thomas Henry (T. H.)
Cherryhomes lived to crease the edges of Texana. It'll Rain Someday
. . . Always Does is the tale of that strong, remarkable man, his
difficult life and treacherous times. More than a rags to riches
story, it is the tale of everyman, everywoman, who with heroic
courage fixed their sights on an uncertain future. Riding horseback
away from a hardscrabble dirt farm, a good mother, an abusive
father, and six siblings, at the age of sixteen T. H. headed west
toward Amarillo. Joining other cowpokes, he rode the Chisholm
Trail, where he learned the skill of driving a hard bargain and
found his calling: cattle ranching. Enduring hell, high water, and
more than a few nightmares, he made his dream come true. Pushing
through the end of the nineteenth century into the twentieth, his
exploits left a story for the ages. This book, drawn from tattered
handwritten letters, dusty photographs, and family lore and legend,
narrates the life of a man whose history begs to see the light of
day.
This book is the only comprehensive bibliography of Canadian
folklore in English. The 3877 different items are arranged by
genres: folktales; folk music and dance; folk speech and naming;
superstitions, popular beliefs, folk medicine, and the
supernatural; folk life and customs; folk art and material culture;
and within genres by ethnic groups: Anglophone and Celtic,
Francophone, Indian and Inuit, and other cultural groups. The items
include reference books, periodicals, articles, records, films,
biographies of scholars and informants, and graduate theses. Each
items is annotated through a coding that indicates whether it is
academic or popular, its importance to the scholar, and whether it
is suitable for young people. The introduction includes a brief
survey of Canadian folklore studies, putting this work into
academic and social perspective. The book covers all the important
items and most minor items dealing with Canadian folklore published
in English up to the end of 1979. It is concerned with legitimate
Canadian folklore - whether transplanted from other countries and
preserved here, or created here to reflect the culture of this
country. It distinguishes between authentic folklore presented as
collected and popular treatments in which the material has been
rewritten by the authors. Intended primarily for scholars of
folklore, international as well as Canadian, the book will also be
of use to scholars in anthropology, cultural geography, oral
history, and other branches of Canadian culture studies, as well as
to librarians, teachers, and the general public.
