Weighs the value of Germanophone culture, and its study, in an age of globalization, transnationalism, and academic change. The study of German-language culture has been rapidly diversifying to express the vibrant multiplicity of what it is now possible to research, and teach, under the rubric of "German Studies." Responding to these developments, German in the World explores what happens when the geographic, linguistic, and temporal boundaries that have traditionally been used to define German-language culture are questioned, and are placed alongside more global perspectives. Chapters consider the transformation of the German-language cultural canon through its engagement with the world, trace the value of German Studies as an interdisciplinary subject practiced across different global locations, and investigate the impact of both on the work of organizations and practitioners entirely beyond the academy. In questioning where German-language culture can be found across these different "worlds," German in the World thus uncovers the continued value of German Studies as a field of critical cultural discourse within a globalized public sphere, placing that culture at the heart of debates on Transnational and World Literature. Ultimately, the contributions to this innovative volume demonstrate how attempts to locate German Studies in its wider geographic and social contexts result not in a discipline undone, but in a discipline reinvigorated and transformed.

This book explores the representation of Wales and 'Welshness' in texts by French- (including Breton) and German-speaking travellers from 1780 to the present day. Since the emergence of the travel narrative as a popular source of information and entertainment in the mid-18th century, writing about Wales has often been embedded and hidden in accounts of travel to 'England'. This book locates and presents these largely forgotten texts and broadens perspectives to encompass European perceptions. Works uncovered for the first time include travelogues, private correspondences, travel diaries, articles and blogs which have Wales or Welsh culture as their focus. The 'travellers' analysed in this volume include those travelling for the purpose of leisure, scholarship or commerce as well as exiles and refugees. By focusing on Wales, a minoritized nation at the geographical periphery of Europe, the authors are able to problematize notions of hegemony and identity, relating to both the places encountered (the 'travellee' culture) and the places of origin (the travellers' cultures). This book thereby makes an original contribution to studies in travel writing and provides an important case study of a culture often minoritized in the field, but that nevertheless provides a telling illustration of the dynamics of intercultural relations and representation.

August Wilhelm Schlegel's translation of 'La devocion de la Cruz', part of a series of works by Calderon which he published between 1803 and 1809 under the title 'Spanisches Theater', was integral to the early German Romantic apotheosis of Golden Age Spain. The 1803 first edition of 'Die Andacht zum Kreuze' was warmly received by major writers including Goethe (who was privy to the manuscript prior to publication) and Schiller, as well as other early German Hispanists and translators such as Keil and Gries. Schlegel's translation, in conjunction with his aesthetic and literary criticism (in particular the attention paid to Calderon in the 'Wiener Vorlesungen' of 1809), helped to revive European interest in Spanish letters after a long period of neglect, not least in Spain itself. The translation into German of this and other works by Calderon, along with that of other key Spanish writers such as Cervantes and Lope de Vega, helped to re-establish Spain's Golden Age writers at the heart of the European canon. This volume will explore the impact and success of Schlegel's work as a translator by placing his work in its literary-historical context and, for the first time, comparing his translation with Calderon's original.

Johann Nikolas Bohl von Faber (1770-1836), a merchant and man of letters from Hamburg, was a Hispanist and Germanist at a time when the balance of ideological dominance was shifting from Enlightenment thought towards the new Romantic aesthetic. This book outlines and evaluates his considerable contribution to the development of European Romanticism, particularly in relation to his central role in the transnational transfer of German Romantic theory to Spain. By tracing the process by which this takes place, the author demonstrates that Bohl's work is crucial for a complete understanding of European romanticism.
