Carol White
R835 Discovery Miles 8 350 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

How will Miranda Nichols-a young, attractive widow-choose between two men she loves, both of whom want to marry her? After permanently moving from Manhattan to her country home, Miranda meets Jeremy Pearson, a sweet learning disabled man who awakens her long dormant sexuality. Their life together promises to be easy, full of fun and uncomplicated-that is until Nick Kramer enters the picture. Nick is the sophisticated New Yorker Miranda reconnects with during her book-signing trip to Manhattan. Each man appeals to her on different levels, and it is not until the very end that we discover Miranda's choice.

Collection of TV dramas by the acclaimed British film maker Ken Loach. 'The Big Flame' (1967) and 'Rank and File' (1971) are trademark Loach dramas, detailing with sympathy the plight of workers caught up in industrial disputes at the Liverpool docks and the Pilkington glassworks, respectively. 'Three Clear Sundays' (1965) tells the story of Danny (Tony Selby), a young man facing up to the death penalty after an attempt to help reduce the sentence of two other prison inmates goes badly wrong. 'Days of Hope' (1975) is an epic four-part series starring Paul Copley, Pamela Brighton and Nikolas Simmonds as members of a working class family whose fortunes are depicted from the end of WWI to what they perceive as their betrayal in the General Strike of 1926. 'The End of Arthur's Marriage' (1965) offers something of a departure from Loach's conventional films, an adaptation of a musical scripted by Christopher Logue. 'In Two Minds' (1967) stars Anna Cropper and examines the plight of those suffering from schizophrenia. 'Up the Junction' (1965) raised the issue of abortion, at the time illegal, and played a major role in shaping public debate on the issue. Its influence in this regard was possibly only surpassed by Loach's most famous TV drama 'Cathy Come Home' (1966), which follows the struggles of young bride Cathy (Carol White) as she struggles to keep a roof over herself and her children in a housing system that seems constantly to be working against her. 'The Price of Coal' (1977) is a two-part drama set in a Yorkshire mining village which contrasts the humour of the working men (many played by actual comedians, including Duggie Brown) with the dangerous conditions in which they are forced to earn a living.

Part of the Honno Voices series that features vital firsthand testimonies from real women, giving an intimate portrayal of life in a different era, this is a vivid recreation of the lives of working class women during a difficult time of depression, dislocation, and dramatic industrial and political struggle. It is an outstanding collection of personal accounts of mothers, grandmothers and aunts, sisters and cousins with an updated introduction and additional footnotes taking into account recent research and analysis of the case of women between the wars. Not just aimed at those interested in the history of the women's movement and women's suffrage, there are stories that bring to life decades past in brilliantly evocative language and paint detailed word pictures of the highs and lows in the Valleys when coal mining was at its height and heavy industry took its toll on whole families and even communities at a time.

R303 Discovery Miles 3 030 Ships in 15 - 30 working days

'60s B-Movie Caper featuring a jungle guide (Michael Latimer) kidnapped by a lost tribe of natives who want to sacrifice him to their god - a white rhino. At the moment of his imminent dispatch, however, he is incredibly thrown backwards in time to a kingdom of dominant, uniformly buxom and comely brunette ladies and their blonde slaves. Their leader Queen Kari (Martine Beswick) puts the hard word on the junglist but he turns her down and sides with the blondes, leading to his imprisonment. Escape from the shoddily built prison looks simple enough, but then there's the matter of escaping this prehistoric timeslice and getting back to the '60s.Produced under the title 'Slave Girls of the White Rhino', the film was a hastily conceived means of recycling the sets and costumes from One Million Years B.C. Producer and director Michael Carreras wisely wrote the screenplay under a pseudonym. The name he chose, 'Henry Younger', was a joke at the expense of Anthony Hinds, who wrote under the name 'John Elder'.

The first four films from the hugely popular 'Carry On' series. In 'Carry On Sergeant' (1958), a sergeant (William Hartnell) takes a bet that the last recruits he trains will win the 'Star Squad' award. The sergeant's inept young charges include Bob Monkhouse, Kenneth Williams, Charles Hawtrey and Kenneth Connor. In 'Carry On Teacher' (1959), trouble erupts at a secondary school when inspectors arrive to evaluate the teachers' work. A group of pupils (led by a youthful Richard O'Sullivan) who don't want their teacher transferred to a different job play up. In 'Carry On Nurse' (1959), the patients in a men's hospital ward decide to revolt against the staff, as led by the indomitable Matron (Hattie Jacques). Finally, in 'Carry On Constable' (1959), police sergeant Wilkins (Sid James) has a new batch of dubious recruits on his hands, whose idea of covert surveillance involves dressing up in drag.
