The Problem of Pleasure - Leisure, Tourism and Crime (Hardcover): Carol Jones, Elaine Barclay, Rob Mawby The Problem of Pleasure - Leisure, Tourism and Crime (Hardcover)
Carol Jones, Elaine Barclay, Rob Mawby
R4,747 Discovery Miles 47 470 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The tourism and leisure industries are big business. Opportunities for leisure and tourism have escalated as disposable income, technology, travel and education have become increasingly available in recent times. However, this trend has been juxtaposed with an increase in crime, particularly since the early the 1950s. Acquisitive crimes have been facilitated with the development of more portable and valuable commodities; some activities, such as drink driving and disorder, have now been socially defined as crimes and are more readily identified through new technology such as the increasing use of CCTV.?

The Problem of Pleasure covers them all. The purpose of this book is to inform and enlighten a range of readers, whose interests may be academic or commercial on possible crime events and modus operandi of criminals. The book has a global perspective, bringing together leading academics from the UK, the US, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand who examine several aspects of leisure that are vulnerable to crime, from illegal hunting to street racing, as well as the impact of crime upon tourists and the tourism industry.

This book will be a key text for students of tourism and leisure as well as criminology and sociology; people working in the tourism and recreation industry; policy makers and the police.

Criminal Justice in Hong Kong (Paperback): Carol Jones, Jon Vagg Criminal Justice in Hong Kong (Paperback)
Carol Jones, Jon Vagg
R2,312 Discovery Miles 23 120 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Containing a wealth of archival material and statistical data on crime and criminal justice, Criminal Justice in Hong Kong presents a detailed evaluation of Hong Kong's criminal justice system, both past and present. Exploring the justice system and the perceptions of popular culture, this book demonstrates how the current criminal justice system has been influenced and shaped over time by Hong Kong's historical position between 'East' and 'West'.

Jones and Vagg's examination of the justice system not only takes into account geographical changes, like the erection of the border with Communist China in 1950 but also insists that any deep understanding of the current system requires a dialogue with the rich and complex narratives of Hong Kong's history.

It explores a range of questions, including:

  • How were Hong Kong's criminal justice institutions and practices formed?
  • What has been its experience of law and order?
  • How has Hong Kong's status as between 'East' and 'West' affected its social, political and legal institutions?

Careful and detailed, this analysis of one of the most economically successful, politically stable and safe yet frequently misrepresented city, is a valuable addition to the bookshelves of all undergraduate and postgraduate students studying Asian law.

Linear Models in the Mathematics of Uncertainty (Paperback, 2013 ed.): Carol Jones, Mark J Wierman, Terry D. Clark, Alex Pham,... Linear Models in the Mathematics of Uncertainty (Paperback, 2013 ed.)
Carol Jones, Mark J Wierman, Terry D. Clark, Alex Pham, Michael A. Redmond
R3,818 Discovery Miles 38 180 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The purpose of this book is to present new mathematical techniques for modeling global issues. These mathematical techniques are used to determine linear equations between a dependent variable and one or more independent variables in cases where standard techniques such as linear regression are not suitable. In this book, we examine cases where the number of data points is small (effects of nuclear warfare), where the experiment is not repeatable (the breakup of the former Soviet Union), and where the data is derived from expert opinion (how conservative is a political party). In all these cases the data is difficult to measure and an assumption of randomness and/or statistical validity is questionable. We apply our methods to real world issues in international relations such as nuclear deterrence, smart power, and cooperative threat reduction. We next apply our methods to issues in comparative politics such as successful democratization, quality of life, economic freedom, political stability, and failed states. Finally, issues involving deaf and hard of hearing children are explored.

Daniel Deronda (Paperback): George Eliot Daniel Deronda (Paperback)
George Eliot; Introduction by Carole Jones; Notes by Carole Jones; Series edited by Keith Carabine
R156 R123 Discovery Miles 1 230 Save R33 (21%) Ships in 9 - 15 working days

With an Introduction and Notes by Dr Carole Jones, freelance writer and researcher. George Eliot's final novel, Daniel Deronda (1876), follows the intertwining lives of the beautiful but spoiled and selfish Gwendolene Harleth and the selfless yet alienated Daniel Deronda, as they search for personal and vocational fulfilment and sympathetic relationship. Set largely in the degenerate English aristocratic society of the 1860s, Daniel Deronda charts their search for meaningful lives against a background of imperialism, the oppression of women, and racial and religious prejudice. Gwendolen's attempts to escape a sadistic relationship and atone for past actions catalyse her friendship with Deronda, while his search for origins leads him, via Judaism, to a quest for moral growth. Eliot's radical dual narrative constantly challenges all solutions and ensures that the novel is as controversial now, as when it first appeared.

Using the successful implementation achieved at Yeading Junior School, this book provides strategies and advice about how to widely implement character education in schools. This helpful guide answers the following questions schools and teachers have when considering how to develop character education: * What character virtues are important in primary education? * How can these be cultivated within the formal and informal curricula? * How do we know if strategies are working and successful? * What constitutes evidence of best practice? With contributions from professional practitioners ranging from building partnerships in the community, intergenerational learning, using character virtues in work with vulnerable children and children with SEND, financial literacy and the diverse religious context of primary education, the book explores the opportunities for developing character virtues and virtue literacy with the purpose of supporting pupils to flourish in society. With the help of this book, schools can create an environment and ethos where learners are not only successful but can make a real difference to the world.

This volume brings together from various sources from the eighteenth century to the present the most interesting criticisms of Shakespeare by English-speaking actors. The introductory chapter suggests the actors' typical contributions to Shakespeare criticism. Each of the four main chapters deals with one of the major tragedies, presenting the actors' ideas about the play itself, and the concluding chapter evaluates the actors' criticisms and points out some relationships between actor-critics and other critics of Shakespeare.

When They Weren't Doing Shakespeare - Essays on Nineteenth-Century British and American Theatre (Paperback): Carol Jones... When They Weren't Doing Shakespeare - Essays on Nineteenth-Century British and American Theatre (Paperback)
Carol Jones Carlisle; Edited by Judith L. Fisher, Stephen Watt; Contributions by Daniel Barrett, Lorraine Commeret, …
R981 Discovery Miles 9 810 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The richness of Victorian theatre has often been neglected because of the era's most celebrated productions of Shakespeare's plays. Judith L. Fisher and Stephen Watt present a vigorous collection of eighteen essays covering the vast expanse of this "other" theatre, including social dramas, Christmas pantomimes, and adaptations of Gothic novels such as "Guy Mannering" and "Metamora; or, The Last of the Wampanoags."
Reflecting both the longings and values of the public and the theatrical conventions of the times, Victorian productions could capture audiences with the historical verisimilitude of William Charles Macready's production of "Richelieu "or incite a storm of public outrage with the too explicitly fallen woman in Olga Nethersole's interpretation of "Sapho." Playwrights worked at adapting such popular classic works as "The Count of Monte Cristo" or devising new melodramas such as "Rent Day" and "Luke the Labourer." Pandering to the tastes of an expanding middle-class audience, theatre bills reflected popular fascination with the daily newspapers' stories of social maladies. Transposed to the stage, "bad" men and women could be punished for wrongdoings in a way that was unlikely or impossible in real life. Emphasizing the variety of stagecraft in the Victorian age, the contributors to "When They Weren't Doing Shakespeare" present a composite portrait of the vibrant theatrical worlds that existed in both nineteenth-century New York and London.

The Shattered Cross - French Catholic Missionaries on the Mississippi River, 1698-1725 (Hardcover): Linda Carol Jones The Shattered Cross - French Catholic Missionaries on the Mississippi River, 1698-1725 (Hardcover)
Linda Carol Jones
R1,434 Discovery Miles 14 340 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In The Shattered Cross, Linda Carol Jones explores the lives and work of five priests of the Seminaire de Quebec, the first French Catholic missionaries to serve along the Mississippi River between 1698 and 1725. Using an array of archival holdings in Quebec and France, Jones provides deep insight into the experiences of these pioneer priests and their interactions with regional Native peoples and cultures. Encounters between early French Catholic missionaries and Native peoples were always complex, often misunderstood, and typically fraught with an array of challenges. As Jones demonstrates, these priests faced a combination of environmental, personal, economic, and leadership difficulties that, along with cultural misunderstandings and poorly designed strategies, made their missionary work arduous. Nevertheless, their efforts led, in some instances, to assimilation of select Christian elements into Native cultures, albeit through creative, mutual adaptation, not solely through Catholic efforts. In describing the challenges the Seminaire priests faced in their Christianization efforts, Jones reveals patches of middle ground that served to transform both missionary and Native cultures when least expected. She relates the story of Father Marc Bergier, who took the openness and compassion he felt for the Native peoples he encountered in Quebec with him as he descended the Mississippi River and worked among the Tamarois. Bergier revealed a willingness to reject certain aspects of Catholic teaching in order to accept various Native traditions. Jones also investigates the case of Father Jean-Francois Buisson de Saint-Cosme, strongly suspected by church leaders of having an inappropriate interest in women while serving as a priest in Acadie, several years before his departure down the Mississippi. Jones suggests that Father Saint-Cosme's subsequent sexual relations with the sister of the Great Sun of the Natchez may have been an attempt to step into a middle ground with her so as to end the Natchez tradition of human sacrifice upon the death of a Great Sun. Expectations of Seminaire leaders in Quebec and Paris meant that those with the best chance for success on the Mississippi were internally driven, acknowledged a sense of calling to be a part of the overarching mission of the seminary, and adhered to the advice of its leadership. The missionary experiences of these five men - their varied encounters with Native peoples, Jesuit missionaries, and French coureurs de bois - align and diverge in unexpected ways, presenting a mosaic that adds to our understanding of both the tribulations French Catholic missionaries faced and the consequences of their efforts along the Mississippi River in the early eighteenth century.
