Renewing America’s Civic Compact addresses the chief challenges
and principal tensions in the operation of our civil society in
order to consider possible paths forward. The meritocracy,
multiculturalism, issues of race, technology, and populist
nationalism in American democracy today are some of the issues that
have created more tensions to American public life. Chapters
address the condition of civil conversation within the university
and across American society. This collection then engages debates
over the continued relevance and durability of liberal ideas and
institutions; whether we have accessible means and resources to
channel digital technology more fruitfully for the sake of human
achievement and well-being; and how some have endeavored to
revitalize the American civic vocation through both scholarly and
practical education. Finally, the volume closes with a call to
restore civic friendship, properly understood, as the foundation
for renewing America’s civic compact.
The purpose of this volume is to discuss the concept of
citizenship-in terms of its origins, its meanings, and its
contemporary place and relevance in American democracy, and within
a global context. The authors in this collection wrestle with the
connection of citizenship to major tensions between liberty and
equality, dynamism and stability, and civic disagreement and social
cohesion. The essays also raise fundamental questions about the
relationship between citizenship and leadership, and invite further
reflection on the features of citizenship and civic leadership
under the American Constitution. Finally, this collection offers
various suggestions about how to revitalize citizenship and civic
leadership through an education that is conducive to a renewal of
American civic practices and institutions.

The Obama administration is shaping up to be one of the most
consequential in recent American history. In the revised edition of
this book, now including new two chapters assessing the Obama
administration and federalism and Obama as commander-in-chief, a
diverse group of presidential scholars steps back from the partisan
debate to consider the Obama presidency through the lens of the
U.S. Constitution's theory, structure, and powers. This timely look
at the Obama presidency establishes a constitutional yardstick of
interest to scholars of the presidency, constitutional thought, and
American political thought.
In 2010, the governor of Arizona signed a controversial immigration
bill (SB 1070) that inspired copycat bills in twenty-two states, a
legal battle that is going to the Supreme Court, and a media frenzy
that brought Arizona to the center of the immigration debate.
Arizona Firestorm brings together a variety of well respected
experts to examine and contextualize the political, economic,
historical, and legal issues prompted by this and other anti-Latino
and anti-immigrant legislation and state actions. It also addresses
the media s role in shaping immigration discourse in Arizona and
elsewhere. What is happening in Arizona has become a case study for
what is happening with respect to immigration issues in the United
States and around the globe. Arizona Firestorm will be of interest
to scholars and students in communication, public policy, state
politics, federalism, and anyone interested in immigration or
Latino politics.
Alexis de Tocqueville asserted that America had no truly great
literature, and that American writers merely mimicked the British
and European traditions of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
This new edited collection masterfully refutes Tocqueville's
monocultural myopia and reveals the distinctive role American
poetry and prose have played in reflecting and passing judgment
upon the core values of American democracy. The essays, profiling
the work of Mark Twain, F. Scott Fitzgerald, John Updike, Edith
Wharton, Walt Whitman, Henry James, Willa Cather, Walker Percy, and
Tom Wolfe, reveal how America's greatest writers have acted as
society's most ardent cheerleaders and its most penetrating
critics. Christine Dunn Henderson's exciting new work offers
literature as a portal through which to view the philosophical
principles that animate America's political order and the mores
which either reinforce or undermine them.
