For quarter of a century now the British Army has been involved in
a bloody and protracted conflict in Northern Ireland. This book
looks at the roots of the current struggle and of British military
intervention, setting both in the longer perspective of the
Anglo-Irish Troubles. It is, however, more than a chronicle of
military strategies and sectarian strife: it seeks to place the use
of the army within the context of the wider British experience of
dealing with political violence, and to address the broader issue
of how democratic states have responded to both ethnic conflict and
the threat of `internal' disorder
In the post-Cold War world, debates over security have broadened
beyond the realm of traditional military concerns. resurgent
nationalism, mass migration, religious radicalism, economic
globalisation and environmental degradation have become
increasingly the focus of debate in the field of security studies.

An investigation of the evolution of Soviet foreign policy from the
Revolution of 1917 until the end of the Soviet era, tracing the
origins and characteristics of Soviet external strategies from
their Marxist-Leninist roots through to the collapse of communism.
There is a careful analysis of Soviet foreign policy alongside the
inception of the Bolshevik state with its global manifesto of
revolutionary change; Stalin's struggle to survive the twin threats
of a revisionist Germany and militant Japan through alliance with
the capitalist states; the expansion of Soviet power in the closing
stages of World War II and the subsequent Cold War; the Soviet
search for some form of accommodation with the West from the 1960s
onwards; the attempts of successive leaderships to find a way of
regenerating the failing Soviet system and the impact of economic
weakness on Soviet behaviour in both the Third World and Eastern
Europe. Based on a wide range of sources, including Russian
materials that have become available since the end of the Cold War,
this work differs from many standard accounts in its emphasis of
the factional nature of decision-making over external strategies
and its description of competing strains in Soviet thinking about
the outside world.
Susan Sell's book reveals how power in international politics is increasingly exercised by private interests rather than governments. In 1994 the World Trade Organization (WTO) adopted the Agreement in Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS), which dictated to states how they should regulate the protection of intellectual property. This book argues that TRIPS resulted from lobbying by powerful multinational corporations who wished to mould international law to protect their markets.
In the post-Cold War world, debates over security have broadened
beyond the realm of traditional military concerns. resurgent
nationalism, mass migration, religious radicalism, economic
globalisation and environmental degradation have become
increasingly the focus of debate in the field of security
studies.
Nonetheless, international politics is still trying to cope with
the empirical legacy of the Cold War. Nuclear proliferation, the
continued search by Russia for security, the attempt by Washington
to sustain its dominant position in international affairs,
continued concerns in the West over the influence of religious, and
in particular Islamic, radicalism, stand as clear examples of
themes from the past continuing to inform present debates about
international security. This volume examines the new, the changing,
and the enduring features of international security in the
post-Cold War era. In so doing, it examines the extent to which
present state structures and institutions have been able to adapt
and accommodate themselves to the diversity of security threats.
