The Short Guide to Environmental Policy (Paperback, New): Carolyn Snell, Gary Haq The Short Guide to Environmental Policy (Paperback, New)
Carolyn Snell, Gary Haq
R696 Discovery Miles 6 960 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Some have argued that the rate and scale of human-induced global environmental change is so significant that it now constitutes a new geological epoch in the Earth's history called the Anthropocene (Zalasiewicz et al, 2011; Steffen et al, 2011). More than ever, there is a need to have appropriate and effective environmental policies that address the challenges of climate change, biodiversity, food, water and energy insecurity, environmental pollution, poverty alleviation and environmental equity. The short guide to environmental policy provides a concise introduction to post-war environmental policies, bringing together perspectives from a range of fields including economics, sociology, politics and social policy. It covers a broad range of issues, including causes and effects of contemporary environmental issues, policy approaches to addressing environmental problems, challenges to implementing environmental policies and future environmental challenges. This book is an essential introduction to all those interested in how policies can address environmental problems.

The Impact of Local Agenda 21 in England (Paperback): Carolyn Snell The Impact of Local Agenda 21 in England (Paperback)
Carolyn Snell
R1,863 Discovery Miles 18 630 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Local Agenda 21 (LA21) was a local level approach to sustainable development that involved local people in the creation of LA21 strategies. This PhD thesis reviews the success of LA21 in England, with two principal aims: to assess the success of such an approach, and to discuss this in relation to recent policy attempts to increase public trust in local government through public participation. This thesis asks and attempts to answer the following research question: To what extent have the original aims of Agenda 21 been achieved by the introduction of Local Agenda 21 in to the English political system, and what are the implications for New Labour's Local Government Act? The key findings of the thesis are twofold. Firstly, that the relationship between local people and local government cannot necessarily be improved through public participation alone. Secondly, that there is a tension between two aspects of sustainable development: the participatory element, and the need to address current lifestyles, attitudes and behaviours. Overall, this thesis concludes that participatory approaches to local problems may not always be the appropriate solution.
