This is the second part of the translation of the original German text Meerestechnische Konstruktionen which was published by Springer-Verlag in 1988. The translated material is a reviewed and updated version of the German text. Wheras the first volume concentrates on general and external factors, this one focuses on factors affecting the design and analysis of offshore structures themselves. In an effort to address a wide audience the topic is presented in a general context. Therefore it introduces students and practising engineers to the field of marine technology and, at the same time, serves as a reference book for experts. Finally it gives specialists in related fields an idea of where their work on individual problems of offshore structures stands in relation to the field as a whole. Offshore Structures, Vol. 2 is based on the authors' lectures and design practice in offshore structures and their components. It assists the reader in developing practical solutions by introducing a large number of examples and reference is made to further specialised literature.

This updated translation from the original German edition provides general background information on oceanology and ocean engineering is given, along with descriptions of drilling techniques, offshore structures and hydrocarbon production at sea. The main part of the book is concerned with the hydrostatic and hydrodynamic analysis of marine structures, followed by an evaluation of marine structure reliability. Seit etwa zwei Dekaden beteiligen sich Industrie und Bauwirtschaft der Bundesre publik Deutschland intensiv an diversen internationalen Offshore-Vorhaben und anderen meerestechnischen Projekten. Die bisherigen Erfolge deutscher Entwick lungen meerestechnischer Konstruktionen sind dabei im internationalen Ver gleich zwar immer noch bescheiden zu nennen, doch bilden hier wirtschaftspoli tische Ausgrenzungen durch Erdoelfoerderlander der westlichen Hemisphare, die auf den Schutz der eigenen Industrie angelegt sind, das entscheidende und nur mit Beharrlichkeit und Geduld zu uberwindende Hindernis auf dem Wege zu einem angemessenen Erfolg, denn das technische Niveau deutscher Entwicklungen ist im internationalen Vergleich als mindestens gleichwertig mit dem konkurrierender Industrienationen zu bewerten. In dieser Situation ist die kontinuierliche Foerderung deutscher Entwicklungen der Meerestechnik, bis hin zu Demonstrationsmodellen meerestechnischer Kon struktionen im grosstechnischen Massstab, durch das Bundesministerium fur Forschung und Technologie hervorzuheben. Mit dieser Foerderung konnte die Leistungsfahigkeit deutscher Technik auch auf dem Spezialgebiet meerestechni scher Konstruktionen sowohl in Industrie und Bauwirtschaft als auch in Forschung und Entwicklung immer wieder eindrucksvoll unter Beweis gestellt werden.
