How should a seventeenth-centry Spanish verse play be presented to a contemporary English-speaking audience? For many reasons, but most usually the lack of playable modern translations, the plays of the seventeenth-century Spanish Comedia have appeared infrequently on the stages of the English-speaking world. Once such translations began to appear in the final decades of the twentieth century, productions followed and audiences were once again given the opportunity of discovering the enormous riches of this theatre. The bringing of Spanish seventeenth-century verse plays to the contemporary English-speaking stage involves a number of fundamental questions. Are verse translations preferable to prose, and if so, what kind of verse? To what degree should translations aim to be "faithful"? Which kinds of plays "work", and which do not? Which values and customs of the past present no difficulties for contemporary audiences, and which need to be decoded in performance? Which kinds of staging are suitable, and which are not? To what degree, if any, should one aim for "authenticity" in staging? And so on. In this volume, a distinguished group of translators, directors, and scholars explores these and related questions in illuminating and thought-provoking essays. As with its four predecessors, the 1990-2002 compilation of On Account of Sex: An Annotated Bibliography on the Status of Women in Librarianship continues the commitment of ALA's Committee on the Status of Women in Librarianship to identify published materials on the status of women in the profession and to compile, update and issue a bibliography of these materials on a regular basis. This comprehensive and substantially annotated bibliography includes materials published in the library and information science literature as well as the literature of related fields (i.e., social sciences, management, higher education, and women's studies). Some of the topics covered are career development for women; salary and compensation; sex discrimination; equal stratification in the field; and the history of women in the profession. Pertinent materials from the growing body of gender and feminist studies in the scholarly literature of librarianship and related fields are indexed. Relevant statistical compilations, such as ARL Salary Surveys, which examine gender as a variable are covered. Books, articles, essays, government documents, ERIC documents, dissertations, conference reports, and pamphlets, as well as some non-print materials and electronic documents are included. The book has a broad subject arrangement, and entries within are arranged chronologically. Each annotation provides the researcher with sufficient information about the source to make a decision on its usefulness and applicability.
The Society for the Study of Early Modern Women and Gender awarded this work the Prize for the Best Translated Edition of a Work on Women and Gender, 2018. Valerie Hegstrom and Catherine Larson have created an annotated new edition and first-ever translation of Angela de Azevedo's vibrant comedy, El muerto disimulado / Presumed Dead, to promote the recuperation of early modern plays authored by women. The book contains a comprehensive introduction that describes Spanish theater in its Golden Age, what is known of the author's life and times, contemporary stagings, and an extensive analysis of the text. Although the playwright penned her work in Spanish, the Portuguese Azevedo set the action in Lisbon, creating in the process an abundance of multicultural allusions that enrich the text's baroque quality. The story unfolds as a cross between a jilted-lover scenario and a whodunit murder mystery. A woman laments her departed lover, a sister cross-dresses to avenge her murdered brother, a man duels with his cousin over lost honor, and before long, the dead man turns up as a ghost, or a bar maid, or a female peddler. Questions about identity abound in the witty El muerto disimulado / Presumed Dead. The transnational nature of this clever comedy complicates meanings, often producing bilingual wordplay that underscores the self-conscious, gender-bending, ludic character of the play and of theater in general. Azevedo highlights her ability to cross linguistic and geographic borders in the early modern period, as she simultaneously works within and offers a challenge to the dominant tradition of the Spanish Comedia.
