A Dateless Bargain (1887) is a novel by Catherine Louis Pirkis. Known for her contribution of Victorian detective fiction, Pirkis wrote over a dozen novels and countless stories throughout her brief career as a professional writer. Among them, A Dateless Bargain is an undervalued study of family, class, and trauma that will be of particular interest to scholars of English aristocracy and the rise of the women's rights movement. At their enormous estate in Gloucestershire, Mab and Joyce-daughters of the immensely wealthy Irving Shenstone-are decorating their father's study in anticipation of his arrival by train. With the help of their gardener, they obtain hundreds of flowers to garnish his desk and bookshelves. Amid the excitement, Mab falls asleep and has a dream where her father stands before her. Unbeknownst to the girls and their mother, Irving Shenstone disembarked from his train at five minutes to twelve, slipped while stepping onto the platform, and struck his head, dying instantly. When the news reaches them, their idyllic life is shattered in an instant, forcing Joyce and Mab to grow up long before their time. A Dateless Bargain is a novel of romance, fortune, and tragedy by a relatively unknown writer of Victorian fiction whose work deserves reassessment by readers and critics alike. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Catherine Louis Pirkis' A Dateless Bargain is a classic of Victorian English literature reimagined for modern readers.

Lady Joan grew up in a modest household in a poor community. When she and her childhood friend, Elliot, fell in love as they grew older, Joan promised to wait for him, planning on marrying when Elliot rose to a higher position in society. However, as the wait grew longer, Joan became impatient. When the son of a wealthy coal owner began to express interest in her, Joan hardly hesitated to marry rich and leave her hometown. Now, years later, Lady Joan is reminded of her choice when her old lover, Elliot, who is now a pastor, gets stationed at the church close to Joan's estate. While Joan reconsiders her past choice of money over love, she is also concerned with the future when she learns that her son, Herrick, has fallen in love with a girl named Lois, threatening the marriage arrangement Joan and her husband were planning for him. Torn between the past and future, Joan must make peace with the decision she made as a young woman while attempting to control her son's love life. Separated into three volumes, Catherine Louisa Pirkis' Red Sister: A Story of Three Days and Three Months follows the drama of two generations facing similar issues of love and life. Set in England during the late 19th century, Red Sister: A Story of Three Days and Three Months provides a beautiful and descriptive portrayal of both the aristocratic and middle classes of the late 1800s. With love triangles, family drama, and tragic deaths, Red Sister: A Story of Three Days and Three Months remains to be compelling and intriguing nearly one-hundred and thirty years after its original publication. This edition of Red Sister: A Story of Three Days and Three Months by Catherine Louisa Pirkis features a new, eye-catching cover design and is printed in an easy-to-read font. With these accommodations, Red Sister: A Story of Three Days and Three Months is restored to modern standards while preserving the original beauty of Catherine Louisa Pirkis' work.

When Loveday Brooke falls from her place in London high society, losing her financial security, she has no choice but to become a working woman. Set in the Victorian era, it is considered unusual and even shameful for a woman to participate in the workforce, but when Brooke proves her ability, no man can deny or ignore her talent. Beginning a career as a detective, Brooke becomes the go-to police consultant for any case that seems unsolvable. The Experiences of Loveday Brooke, Lady Detective is a collection of seven short stories, each portraying an individual mystery, varying crimes and intrigue. The Black Bag on the Doorstep is the first title in the collection, and follows a Christmas Eve robbery. Featuring a more heinous crime, The Murder at Troyte's Hill depicts a murder mystery after a local lodge-keeper is found dead in a ransacked room. Challenged with one of her most puzzling mysteries, Brooke attempts to find a young girl who vanished without a trace in the fan-favorite story, Missing. Unable to find a lead even after ten days of searching, the police are ready to give up, but Loveday Brooke is determined to reunite the girl with her family. With an original approach to the mystery genre, The Experiences of Loveday Brooke, Lady Detective was among Catherine Louisa Pirkis' most popular work. Often compared to Sherlock Holmes, Loveday Brooke remains to be a beloved and memorable character from the detective fiction genre, and is one of the earliest depictions of a woman working in the detective field in literature. With mysteries ranging from crimes of theft, murder, kidnap, and conspiracy, The Experiences of Loveday Brooke, Lady Detective provides a fun and fresh reading experience, as it has remained to be progressive and intriguing nearly one-hundred and thirty years after its original publication. This edition of The Experiences of Loveday Brooke, Lady Detective by Catherine Louisa Pirkis is now available in an easy-to-read font, and features a new, eye-catching cover design. With these accommodations, The Experiences of Loveday Brooke, Lady Detective is restored to modern standards while the original mastery of Catherine Louisa Pirkis' work is preserved.

Madge Cohen does not regret her marriage to a man nearly twice her age, but looks forward to the day she is able to remarry. Young and lively, Madge was forced to marry Peter Cohen, a man nearly old enough to be her grandfather. While his wealth affords Madge new and greatly appreciated privileges, she finds Mr. Cohen to be boring. While Madge dreams of all the exciting things she could do with a younger husband, she decides to study music, so she can channel her unspent energy into something other than daydreams. Though Madge is forced to wait for love, she is happy to help find it for her friends, especially Lance, Mr. Cohen's protege. Determined to watch over Lance to ensure he does not make any costly mistakes, Madge and Lance grow to be close friends who support each other without conditions. However, when Lance becomes fascinated with Miss. Shore, a mysterious and blunt woman, Madge has her doubts. After Lance finds Miss Shore homeless and alone, but oddly stoic, he asks Madge to help her, hoping to get to know Miss Shore better. As a stubborn woman, Madge has a difficult time discarding her original ill impression of Miss Shore. Still, she agrees to help Lance grow closer to her, inviting Miss Shore to stay in the Cohen manor for a time. As the arrangement unfolds, Madge becomes increasingly concerned about the mysterious woman, who seems to be completely haunted by a dark event in her past. Miss Loveday Brooke was one of the of the very first fictional female detectives -- an unheard-of profession for a woman in Victorian London. This volume collects seven of her classic adventures: "The Black Bag Left on a Door-Step," "The Murder at Troyte's Hill," "The Redhill Sisterhood," "A Princess's Vengeance," "Drawn Daggers," "The Ghost of Foutain Lane," and "Missing " These stories all originally appeared in Ludgate Magazine in the 1890s.

R756 Discovery Miles 7 560 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This volume of 2 Detectives pairs two early "lady detectives" who showed that intelligence, investigative skills, and courage were not limited to those of the masculine variety. Loveday Brooke's undercover skills allowed her to blend into the background and gather intelligence without tipping off the suspects. She was the consummate professional, much appreciated by her boss, though she didn't always agree with him (and he didn't always understand her methods). These seven stories were published in 1893 and 1894. Lady Molly quickly worked her way to the top of Scotland Yard's female detectives, using her wits and intuition to solve puzzling crimes, and driven by a very personal motivation to solve a murder that had sent the wrong man to prison. These stories were first published in 1910.
