Mary Slessor grew up in the slums of Dundee in the 1800's. Industry was booming but housing was sub- standard and life expectancy was low. Illness, disease and malnutrition killed many children before they reached the age of five. Mary was lucky - born into a poor family, abused by her father - she was still alive. Dundee was Mary's training ground for a far fiercer battle. Mary left the shores of Scotland while only in her early twenties to immerse herself in reaching the lost tribes of Calibar in West Africa. Her preparation in the slums of Dundee was the key ingredient to her success on the mission field - that and her tireless trust and belief in her Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. He was the reason she was there. Calibar today still remembers Mary Slessor, affectionately known as "Ma," her influence on that area of Africa was astounding. Superstition demanded that families kill twin babies and murder slaves and women at funerals - the Lord Jesus Christ that Mary Slessor brought to these people set them free from all that. They were set free from the law of sin and death.

Children are fascinated with letters from as young as three and are still singing alphabet based rhymes at the age of seven. The alphabet is a collection of 26 building blocks that we use to build a life-time of reading. In this instance the alphabet is also used to build strong biblical foundations. The gospel is explained using the following approach: A is for Adam, B is for bad, C is for care, D is for don't, E is for Eve, F is for friends, G is for Gave, H is for Hard etc. Using a mixture of general and biblically specific words the gospel story is explained from the first day that Adam and Eve fell, through the Biblical stories of the flood and Jesus miracles, then onto the crucifixion and resurrection. Each letter is linked to the next by a question which makes the reader want to turn the page to find out how the story progresses. Each letter has different activities and questions linked to it. Throughout the book the children are asked to think of different things about themselves and about God. At the end there are summary sheets for the children to fill in and complete - entitled All about me; All about God.
The best friend ever will never leave you. Jesus is the friend you can always trust. He is caring and loving and strong. Find out about Jesus who can be your friend and Saviour. He is the very best.
John Knox spent his life with a sword in one hand and a Bible in the other and he wasn't afraid to use either. He began his theological life as a body guard to George Wishart - and it was when that young man was put to death by the religious authorities that John Knox was finally persuaded of the need to awaken his country from the death of injustice and spiritual poverty that afflicted it. He was never built for a quiet life and when he ran from one danger, he often found himself headed straight for another. Escaping from the authorities brought him straight into a castle siege and from there he ended up as a galley slave on a French frigate. No wonder he appreciated liberty when he had felt the grasp of slavery's chains and the cut of the enemy's whip. But his thirst for true freedom came from his longing for God's Word to be preached. John knew that true liberty only came from being in service to God and his Kingdom. Many stood against him and they still do today... but he gave much to his country and to his God and the church and Scotland owe John Knox - they owe him thanks as they owe the God he served thanks for calling such men to be his preachers.
