Catherine Mcdonald, Christine Craik, Linette Hawkins, Judy Williams
R1,212 Discovery Miles 12 120 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Helping children, disabled people, the unemployed, the elderly or homeless people can be inspiring work. However you can only help other people effectively if you understand your role clearly and know how to navigate the organisation in which you work. Professional Practice in Human Service Organisations examines what it means to be a professional in human service work, and how to develop excellence in professional practice...Making explicit what is often held as tacit knowledge in day to day practice, the authors explain the dynamics of human service organisations. They outline the challenges worker can face in caring for vulnerable people while at the same time fulfilling expectations of management and funding bodies. They explain the importance of understanding the complex networks of service delivery systems, including the role of information technology. They also examine how workers can maintain professional relations with clients, colleagues and other workers by developing skills in advocacy and in handling conflict, complaints and ethical dilemmas...Professional Practice in Human Service Organisations is essential reading for practitioners new to roles in social work, community work, youth work and related fields.

Analysing Social Policy - A Governmental Approach (Hardcover): Greg Marston, Catherine Mcdonald Analysing Social Policy - A Governmental Approach (Hardcover)
Greg Marston, Catherine Mcdonald
R3,212 Discovery Miles 32 120 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book brings together leading international researchers to discuss governmental approaches to analysing social policies.Analysing Social Policy expands the scope of social policy analysis using the insights from post-Foucauldian scholarship on the art of governing in liberal democracies. One of the main conclusions reached is that policy researchers need to pay much greater attention to the minutiae of policy reform, and to the discursive and material ways in which power operates in policy change. The chapters comprising this book are purposefully written in a clear, accessible and reflective manner, with each of the contributions empirically grounded, drawing on social policy problems and practices in many countries, ranging from North America to Europe to Australasia. The editors address key concerns of both policy analysts as well as academic researchers attempting to locate appropriate theoretical frameworks to make sense of welfare state restructuring in the 21st century. This book will appeal to researchers and research students in political science, social policy, social work and sociology through its demonstration of how to apply contemporary social theory to research problems. It will also be of interest to policy scholars around the world who are involved in analysing the intersections of power, politics and policy.

Seasons of the Vineyard - Seasons of the Vineyard A Wine Country Adventure (Paperback): Catherine Macdonald Seasons of the Vineyard - Seasons of the Vineyard A Wine Country Adventure (Paperback)
Catherine Macdonald
R306 Discovery Miles 3 060 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Francesca Bernard ran away from the family vineyard because she was determined to live a different life--one without the grapes and her secrets. But when Enrico, the foreman, calls her home because her father's dementia is making it impossible for him to manage the vineyard, she and her son return and discover the vineyard and her father in dire need. She assumes her father's role and deals with the complexities of running the vineyard, his aging, and Enrico's advances. The grapes are struggling. Money is tight. Her father is diagnosed with Alzheimer's. Her teenage son experiments with drugs, and Enrico is still in love with her. Through sweat and hard work, Francesca rediscovers that the rhythms of the vineyard are deeply restorative. She becomes certain of one thing: she wants to resurrect the vineyard and prove everyone wrong. She is willing to do just about anything to prove she can be a world-class vintner--even if that means sleeping with the competition. Her relationship with the bad boy of the Sonoma Valley sparks jealously in Enrico and he abandons her and the besieged vineyard. Francesca is left to fend for herself, but is determined to uncover the secret of the Zinfandel wine that once made the vineyard famous. This wine will allow her to become a renowned vintner, but the secret is buried with her mother. How is Francesca able to save the vineyard and uncover the secret of the Zinfandel, deal with the past, and come to terms with her true love?

Little Girl Lost - A True Story of Tragic Death (Paperback): Marilyn Catherine McDonald Ma Little Girl Lost - A True Story of Tragic Death (Paperback)
Marilyn Catherine McDonald Ma
R223 Discovery Miles 2 230 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Little Girl Lost, a true story of a boy's drowing and his 10-year-old sister's loss, is drawn from the author's haunting memories of growing up in a suburb of Detroit, Michigan in the 1940s. Part II of the book offers adults resosurces and a bibliography to assist children experiencing loss and grief. The author has said: "Thank God, there's an increasing awareness and emphasis in helping children understand and process the impact of traumatic and tragic events and experiences that directly or indirectly affect their lives. The counseling of children has come a long, long way from the times of which I write -- half a century ago."

Snowbirds Unlimited - Tale From the Restless Traveler (Paperback): Marilyn Catherine McDonald Snowbirds Unlimited - Tale From the Restless Traveler (Paperback)
Marilyn Catherine McDonald
R335 Discovery Miles 3 350 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Snow falls each year before we leave Central Oregon for the winter. Usually a light dusting that doesn't last. It's a lovely reminder of what we once enjoyed. However, I put my cross-country skis in a garage sale before I moved to Central Oregon in 1999, knowing my husband Harry Taylor and I would be spending our winters in Mexico. When I started searching for answers to why we are called snowbirds, I ran across the lyrics of Anne Murray's song, as well as an encyclopedia section on the Junco, or snowbird, relative of the finches. Slate-colored Juncos breed in northern evergreen forests of Canada and the United States, and are found as far south as the Gulf of Mexico. Canadians and Americans have been heading south for decades, if not centuries, to escape the cold sting of winter. You need only drive on Oregon Highway 97 from late September through December to see the migration of cars and RVs heading south. My how these houses on the road have grown as many snowbirds now are full timers. Snowbirds Unlimited: Tales from the Restless Traveler merely scratches the surface of a lifetime of travel at home and abroad, by air, land or sea, coupled with ten years of documenting portions of that travel in published columns and articles. Many interesting, exotic and wonderful destinations are missing from this book due to the space limitations. This is a pick up and put down book, much like my previous collection of published columns in Mother of Eight Survives Population Explosion: Just Between Us Column Selections. Although the days of family-travel slide shows in the living room have passed, we now have social networking to share our enthusiastic reports and photos online. And, if some of us are fortunate enough to do what I am doing, and readers are interested enough to buy the books we still can share our adventures.

Alert the Media - How the American Indian Movement used the Mass Media (Paperback): Marilyn Catherine McDonald Ma Alert the Media - How the American Indian Movement used the Mass Media (Paperback)
Marilyn Catherine McDonald Ma
R294 Discovery Miles 2 940 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Two vital and dynamite topics are merged into one book. Alert the Media studies how the American Indian Movement (AIM), a major political movement sweeping the country in the 1970s used, and was used by the mass media. Chapter topics include: Movement toward Social Change (basis of motivation, goals, structure and methods); Mass Media - Power and Responsibility (cultural history and development); American Indian Culture (language, beliefs, and institutions); American Indian Movement (AIM formation and foundation, leadership objectives and failures, and the trail of broken treaties); Wounded Knee - 1973 (General Custer in South Dakota, Wounded Knee Massacre, Chairman Wilson, and media involvement); Testimony of Douglas Durham, FBI Operative; and Dennis Banks in Oregon. The intense interaction between the mass media and mass movements such as AIM has generated undercurrents of public discontent and dissatisfaction with the media. The media's perceived participation in and encouragement of undesirable activities and repetition of messages connected with the increasing number of political and social causes and movements adds to a political polarization. Students of media, political science, and Native American culture and causes will be as interested in Alert the Media, as well as those readers who wish to become more educated and intelligent consumers of news. The public cannot rest its own responsibility for discernment on the shoulders of media representatives. Individuals have a responsibility to treat news and political commentary as they would treat any other commodity.

Dorothy and William Wordsworth (Paperback): Catherine MacDonald MacLean Dorothy and William Wordsworth (Paperback)
Catherine MacDonald MacLean
R1,223 Discovery Miles 12 230 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Originally published in 1927, this volume contains a series of short essays on the lives and works of Dorothy and William Wordsworth. In the composition of his poetry, William relied heavily on the detailed accounts of nature found in Dorothy's writings, particularly the Grasmere Journal. But in spite of this, and although she was a skilled artist in her own right, Dorothy tends to be overshadowed by William's achievements. These essays are notable for asserting the importance of Dorothy, both in terms of her literary achievements and her influence on her brother. They will be of value to anyone with an interest in the Wordsworths and the development of British Romanticism.
