“This is not a work of fiction. This is the raw reality of life,
and a larger part of society. Nothing more, nothing less. Some
statistics reveal that approximately 8000 children are abused in
some way everyday, of which 5 will die globally. This equates to
almost 3 million abuse cases a year and almost 2000 deaths a year.
Whether or not the figures are lower or higher I’m obviously not
sure but apparently child abuse has increased 134% since 1980 and
is now classed as a worldwide epidemic. Having said that, I
honestly believe that my testimony can be of some help to someone
out there. This book is based on the foundation of how being
sexually, mentally and physically abused has affected my life and
how the desire for escaping the anguish and the reality of the
situation, through drinking alcohol, has nearly killed
me...numerous times to say the least. This will take you on a
journey through my childhood years, my teenage nightmare, to the
beginning of my adult life.” This is not just the unburdening of
Nicky’s story. It is the start of something new; a sign of hope; a
show of strength. Nicky refuses to take the hand that she has been
dealt and become another statistic. She has hope for herself and
her future and a strong focus on the new organisation she is
developing.

Shortlisted in Scotland's National Book Awards By the time she
reached her fifties, Catherine had experienced period pain,
childbirth, and early menopause, alongside love and laughter, a
career in journalism, and raising two daughters. Like many of her
peers, along the way she'd dieted, jogged, sweated, tanned, permed,
and plucked-always attempting to conform to prevailing standards of
"acceptable womanhood." But when a medical crisis comes along, she
can no longer pummel her body into submission and is forced to take
stock. From growing up on a farm where veterinarians were more
common than doctors, and where illness was "a nuisance," she now
faces the nuisance of a lifetime. One Body is the demystifying,
relatable, often hilarious, and sometimes hair-raising story of how
Catherine navigates her treatment and the emotions and reflections
it provokes. And how she comes to drop the unattainable standards
imposed on her body, and simply appreciate the skin she is in.
'If you loved Tara Westover's Educated, get yourself a copy of When
I Had a Little Sister as soon as humanly possible...beautifully
under-stated...a startling, elegiac portrait of farming life in
modern Britain.' Vogue 'Gripping and heart-wrenching' Mail on
Sunday On a cold December day in 2013 Catherine Simpson received
the phone call she had feared for years. Her little sister Tricia
had been found dead in the farmhouse where she, Catherine and their
sister Elizabeth were born - and where their family had lived for
generations. Tricia was 46 and had been stalked by depression all
her life. Yet mental illness was a taboo subject within the family
and although love was never lacking, there was a silence at its
heart. After Tricia died, Catherine found she had kept a lifetime
of diaries. The words in them took her back to a past they had
shared, but experienced so differently, and offered a thread to
help explore the labyrinth of her sister's suicide. When I had a
Little Sister tells a story of sisters and sacrifice, grief and
reclamation, and of the need to speak the unspeakable.
This volume is the first to focus exclusively on diasporic
filmmaking and the rich cultural diversity within Australian
cinema, and it contains previously unpublished articles by some of
the foremost experts on Australian cinema in the world.
Contributors to "Diasporas of Australian Cinema" discuss a variety
of contemporary and historical filmmaking, encompassing
documentaries, features and short films. A number of key feature
films are discussed including "Forty Thousand Horsemen, Silver
City, Wog Boy," "Head On, Russian Doll, Japanese Story, "and" Lucky
Miles." Opening with a comprehensive chapter that introduces the
organizing concept of this volume, diasporic hybridity, the essays
go on to explore migration, Asian-Australian subjectivity,
cross-cultural romance, Islamic-Australian identity and
"wogsploitation" comedy. A useful reference source for scholars of
film, migration, cultural, and Australian studies, "Diasporas of
Australian Cinema "also features a comprehensive filmography
listing Australian features, documentaries and shorts with
significant diasporic content.
This study explores the experiences of women of color who attended
an elite, predominantly white public high school in the
Northeastern United States through one of three points of entry: as
town residents attending their local high school, or as commuter or
boarding students via two distinct voluntary racial desegregation
programs. Women in all three groups experience feelings of
marginalization and stigma. At the same time, many also discuss the
benefits of having lived in or attended school in this environment.
Women developed strong internal bonds within and across their
respective groups, some were able to racially diversify social
networks and increase access to new forms of social capital through
both their own initiatives and efforts on the part of adults in the
school and community, and many also discuss the acquisition of
elite forms of cultural capital that have served them into
adulthood. Even with these general trends, point of access clearly
mediates the experience, with geographic and symbolic boundaries
varying by group.
Alice's life is dictated by her autistic son, Sam, who refuses to
leave their remote Lancashire farm. Her only time 'off' is two
hours in Lancaster on a Tuesday afternoon - and even that doesn't
always pan out to be the break she needs. Husband Duncan brings
Larry, a rootless wanderer, to the farm to embark on a money making
scheme they've dreamed up. Alice is hostile but Larry beguiles Sam
with tales of travel in the outside world and, soon, Alice begins
to fall for him, too. By turns blackly comic, heart-breaking and
heart-warming, Truestory looks at what happens when sacrifice
slithers towards martyrdom. By turns happy and sad, ultimately it
is a tale of hope.
