Molly and Andrew are just trying to get home to Ireland for the holidays, when a freak snowstorm grounds their flight.

Nothing romantic has ever happened between them: they’re friends and that’s all. But once a year, for the last ten years, Molly has spent seven hours and fifteen minutes sitting next to Andrew on the last flight before Christmas from Chicago to Dublin, drinking terrible airplane wine and catching up on each other’s lives. How often are the perspectives of Puerto Rican students recognized, listened to, and taken into account? Catherine Walsh's work always unfolds over a long span, and Optic Verve - her first book since 2005's City West - is no exception, being another book-length experimental poem.

Catherine Walsh is an Irish poet whose work owes more, in formal terms, to American models than it does to the Irish poetic tradition. Her work is experimental, and questing, and operates over large spans. 'City West' is a long poem, the most recent of her works in this vein to be completed. Shearsman Books will publish another long poem, "Optic Verve," in 2006.

This book highlights the socio-political nature of literacy and illuminates the potential in literacy for the empowerment of individuals and communities subordinated by race/ethnicity, culture, language, gender, and class. It addresses the specific reality of literacy for both child and adult language minority populations; it argues that traditional discourses and approaches to literacy justify and maintain literacy deficits and poor school achievement and supports a divergent positioning of minorities and women within the social structure.
