If you are working in a time-sensitive context, need to deliver
research findings so they can be used to inform decisions, or are
finding it difficult to access research funding for long-term
qualitative research, this book will help you. Introducing 'rapid
qualitative research', it demonstrates how you can conduct high
quality qualitative research within time, access and resource
constraints. The book uses real world examples to illustrate the
benefits and challenges of using rapid qualitative research
designs. Focusing on the when, why and how, it explains the
difference between cutting corners and making quick, well-informed
research choices that support rigorous, credible research. Key
features of the book include discussion questions and exercises for
you to reflect on and apply your learning, as well as two case
study chapters of real-world research so you can see rapid research
in action. Written by the world's leading expert on this subject,
this book contains the theoretical and practical nuts and bolts you
need to reframe existing qualitative methods, speed up your
research, and make tangible contributions to your field. It is the
perfect companion for any researcher, final-year undergraduate or
postgraduate student looking to conduct rapid, but rigorous,
qualitative research.

The book provides researchers, students, and practitioners in
public health, anthropology, and related fields with a brief
introduction to a health-care model, Community Participatory
Involvement (CPI), which for 20 years has proved successful in
fighting global health problems. CPI differs from other
community-based models in that it involves a unique synergy of
local, civil, and political authorities. Using a South American
cholera epidemic as an example, the book -explains in step-by-step
detail how the CPI model is used;-includes teaching activities, a
list of important tools, and model workshops;-demonstrates how the
CPI model can be replicated to deal with a diverse range of public
concerns, from the control of infectious diseases to animal
husbandry to teacher education.

Rapid ethnographies are used in a wide range of fields to speed up
research quickly and effectively. This book is the first practical
guide to rapid ethnographies, helping readers to improve skills in
the design, implementation, dissemination and use of findings
generated through rapid ethnographic research. It gives advice and
guidelines for carrying out rapid and rigorous research and
provides details of tools used in the field. Vignettes reflecting
on the author's research are included throughout, including
observations on research carried out during the COVID-19 pandemic,
to highlight how challenges of conducting rapid ethnographies can
be overcome. Case studies across a range of subjects are also
included, to demonstrate how rapid ethnographies can be applied in
practice. With its useful tools and easy-to-read format, it will be
used by teachers and students, as well as researchers wanting to
successfully implement rapid ethnographies in their own work.

Recent work in the mobilities literature has highlighted the
importance of thinking about mobility and immobility as a
continuum, where movement intersects with processes that might
entail episodes of transition, waiting, emptiness, and fixity. This
focus on stillness, things that are stuck, incomplete or in a state
of transition can point to new theoretical, methodological and
practical dimensions in social studies of medicine. This edited
volume brings the concept of immobility to the forefront of social
studies of medicine to explore how immobility shapes processes of
medical care and the theoretical and methodological challenges of
studying immobility in medical contexts. The authors in this volume
draw from a wide range of case studies across the globe to make
contributions to our current understanding of health, illness and
medicine, mobilities and immobilities. Chapter 2 "Lists in Flux,
Lives on Hold? Technologies of Waiting in Liver Transplant
Medicine" is available open access under a Creative Commons

By taking an ethnographic approach to medical travel, this
important book uses critical perspectives to understand
inequalities in healthcare access and delivery, including gender,
class and ethnicity, and explore how these are negotiated. In this
key text Vindrola- Padros presents a comprehensive overview of the
work carried out on this topic to date, highlights the gaps that
remain and suggests strategies for enriching medical travel
research in the future. Drawing from the author's research on
internal medical travel to access pediatric oncology treatment in
Buenos Aires, Argentina and other research from across the globe,
this book presents four dimensions of medical travel that can be
explored through a critical (im)mobilities lens: infrastructures,
differential mobility empowerments, culture and affective
dimensions of care and travel. Vindrola-Padros encourages the
reader to critically explore processes of medical travel by
considering the structures that shape travel, individual capacities
for travel, the role emotions play in decisions and experiences of
movement and service delivery and the ways in which culture(s)
influence both travel and care. This book will be important reading
for scholars across medical sociology, anthropology and critical
health studies.

This book examines the experiences of global healthcare workers
during the COVID-19 pandemic. It shines a light on the experiences
of healthcare workers during the pandemic, exploring their lived
experiences of delivering care without losing sight of the
emotional and symbolic nature of their work. Incorporating
cutting-edge research from global experts in medical anthropology,
medical sociology, medicine, psychology and nursing, it uniquely
demonstrates the value of rapid qualitative research during
infectious epidemics. Drawing on data collected during the COVID-19
pandemic, the book explores global healthcare policies and
healthcare workers' experiences across 20 countries.

How does the need to obtain and deliver health services engender
particular (im)mobility forms? And how is mobility experienced and
imagined when it is required for healthcare access or delivery?
Guided by these questions, Healthcare in Motion explores the
dynamic interrelationship between mobility and healthcare, drawing
on case studies from across the world and shedding light on the
day-to-day practices of patients and professionals.
This edited volume explores the interconnection between care work,
travel, and healthcare, emphasizing the emotional dimensions of
seeking care away from home. It brings together contributions from
disciplines such as anthropology, nursing, primary care, sociology
and geography and covers experiences of medical travel and other
forms of remote care in the United States, Laos, India, Italy,
France, Finland, Switzerland, and Russia.
