'Climate change' and 'sustainable development' involve complex interactions between climatic, environmental, economic, institutional, social, political and technological processes at global level. They cannot be addressed or comprehended in isolation of broader societal goals. The papers in the book examine these twin aspects that contribute towards global development and thus present the various efforts undertaken by the researchers, academicians and policy makers in this direction. The book while dealing with current research and development in climate change and sustainable development, also discusses about the significance of natural resource management for sustainable development. It covers the issues of topical interest viz., carbon emission trading, organic farming, waste water management, impact of land use, special and temporal variation of rainfall, concepts of green building, sustainable agriculture, resource recovery mechanism, disaster risk reduction initiatives, GHG emissions, environmental regulations etc. Written by leading experts, the diverse chapters dovetailed in the volume serve the interests of all sections of the society who are working in the areas of climate change and sustainable development. Practicing engineers, environmental managers, academicians, researchers, research scholars, students and government officials will consult this book as an essential guide to help mitigate and adapt the effects of climate change and sustainable development.
The state level public enterprises (SLPEs) were set up specially to meet the gaps in the social and economic development, especially industrial growth, employment creation, health, education, and provision of amenities. Services like electricity, medical care, transportation, irrigation, tourism, warehousing and water facilities reached people in far-off places due to the setting up of the SLPEs. Over the years, the central enterprises have been subject of study and discussion, however, the SLPEs have remained unexplored. The present volume analyses the various facets of functioning of the SLPEs in India. Based on primary as well as secondary data sources, it covers both the macro view and the state-wise scenario. The book highlights the gap between expectations and achievements. It suggests that to develop a greater understanding of the potential, problems, and prospects of the SLPEs, more information should be generated and focused research needs to be undertaken.
