Innovation studies is an evolving interdisciplinary field that has
moved away from the weaknesses of neoclassical thinking and
embraced evolutionary theory. In this timely book, the authors
offer a precise introduction to the nature of national innovation
systems (NIS), examining the history of the concept and its use in
today's world. This book uses language appropriate for both social
science and engineering scholars to offer an accurate synopsis of
the emergence of the concept, its theoretical core and its
evolution. It analyses both developed and developing countries in
terms of their NIS and its application to current societal
challenges, such as economic growth, inclusive development and
environmental sustainability, in an increasingly globalized and
interconnected world. Key features include:? three authors from
three different generations and countries offer an overview of NIS
from around the world extensive use of examples from the Global
North and Global South recommended in-depth reading after each
topical chapter overview of future research challenges up-to-date
review of the literature and engagement in current debates. Erudite
and accessible, this unique book on NIS can easily be used for
undergraduate and graduate teaching. It is a valuable, and
much-needed resource for teachers, students and researchers at all
levels.
The innovation systems (IS) approach emerged as a theoretical
framework in the industrialized world in the mid-1990s to explain
innovation and growth in the developed world. This Handbook is the
first attempt to adapt the IS approach to developing countries from
a theoretical and empirical viewpoint. The Handbook brings eminent
scholars in economics, innovation and development studies together
with promising young researchers to review the literature and push
theoretical boundaries. They critically review the IS approach and
its adequacy for developing countries, discuss the relationship
between IS and development, and address the question of how it
should be adapted to the realities of developing nations. Spanning
national, sectoral and regional innovation systems across Asia,
Latin America and Africa, and written by the world's leading
scholars within the field, this comprehensive Handbook will
strongly appeal to academics, researchers and students with an
interest in innovation and technology in developing countries.

This book brings together some of the founders of the IC movement
in Europe to critically review the virtues and shortcomings of
intellectual capital as a managerial concept. More questions on the
future of IC study are perhaps raised than answered as the
contributors attempt to open new avenues of research. The
contributors acknowledge that the concept of managing intellectual
capital is paradoxical in many respects. First and foremost, the
boundaries of the knowledge intensive organization are fading.
Organizations are open, networked and global, and intellectual
capital mobile and elusive - so how can something with no
boundaries be managed? Furthermore, is it possible that in a
knowledge-intensive society, firms that do not focus on their
intellectual capital are successful? That is, are there any
pre-requisites for intellectual capital to be relevant? The book
explores such paradoxes in the knowledge intensive organization,
critically discusses the limitations of intellectual capital and
revises the agenda for intellectual capital studies in the future.
Drawing on empirical evidence including two EU funded projects
involving researchers, practitioners and policy makers from
international associations such as the OECD and the EU, this book
will prove a thought provoking read for those with an interest in
various aspects of management such as: knowledge management,
management control, management accounting, strategic management and
management of innovation.

"For today's hungry Christians, teachings on the Rule of Saint
Benedict by one of the twentieth century's best-loved Catholic
writers."
"Benedict is saying, 'Wake up Open your eyes Open your ears Let
the divine life and light invade you so that your life is filled
with aspiration, joy and hope.'" - M. Basil Pennington
At Our Lady of the Holy Spirit Monastery in Conyers, Georgia,
Abbot Basil Pennington gave weekly talks to the monks on the Rule
of Saint Benedict. Now, readers and listeners are able to sit and
learn from one of the most important spiritual teachers of the last
century. The talks have been lovingly transcribed and organized
into book form, and they have also been exquisitely preserved on a
single compact disk.
This ancient Rule, written in the sixth century, continues to be a
guide for men and women wishing to live a Christian life. Beginning
with the prologue, Abbot Basil reads and comments on selected
passages, providing the monks with insights into applying them in
daily living. He takes the Latin phrases from the Rule and
translates them into wisdom for the journey. Using his own monastic
experiences, Basil illustrates how the Rule is more than a guide -
it is a way of life to be lived in love for Jesus Christ and in
service to others.
The "Listen With Your Heart Compact Disc" (double CD) is the
recorded version of M. Basil Pennington giving nine of the talks
from which the book is transcribed.
