This book presents a comprehensive overview of the recent advances in the domain of optimal guidance, exploring the characteristics of various optimal guidance algorithms and their pros and cons. Optimal guidance is based on the concept of trajectory optimization, which minimizes the meaningful performance index while satisfying certain terminal constraints, and by properly designing the cost function the guidance command can serve as a desired pattern for a variety of mission objectives. The book allows readers to gain a deeper understanding of how optimal guidance law can be utilized to achieve different mission objectives for missiles and UAVs, and also explores the physical meaning and working principle of different new optimal guidance laws. In practice, this information is important in ensuring confidence in the performance and reliability of the guidance law when implementing it in a real-world system, especially in aerospace engineering where reliability is the first priority.

Throughout world history, some military personnel have committed crimes. However, many times this social phenomenon has been ignored by scholars. To add to the study of military crime, this study investigates crimes committed by U.S. military personnel stationed in different countries. This study utilizes data collected by the U.S. Army Judiciary between 1995 and 2000 to examine crimes committed by U.S. Army personnel stationed in the continental U.S. and in foreign countries, i.e., European countries and South Korea. The data contain 2,795 military crime cases. Findings indicate that drunken married male soldiers, who are sergeants or staff sergeants in combat operation units, are more likely to commit violent crime than other personnel, and that married soldiers who are stationed in Korea are more likely to commit sex offenses than others. The results from this study should be useful to military authorities who oversee any types of military or paramilitary organizations or anyone else who may be interested in military sociology, its subculture, and/or ramifications of military socialization.
