Did the famous Davy Crockett surrender at the Alamo or die fighting
like a tiger according to Texas tradition?
Did Sam Houston lie when he said he ordered James Bowie to blow up
the Alamo? You be the judge.
What happened to James C. Neill, the real commander of the Alamo?
After years of researching all available Alamo records, including
primary letters and accounts by participants, government documents
from the period, newspaper articles, diary entries, and even
receipts, Wallace O. Chariton has answered these and many more of
the perplexing Alamo questions. No punches are pulled in this hard
hitting investigation. Some of the answers presented may excite
your patriotic yearnings: other more controversial answers may
ignite your historical anger. In either event, some new light has
been cast onto a few of the shadows of the Alamo legends.
"Texas Wit & Wisdom" is a barrel of laughs crammed into one
little ol' book. Inside you'll find a friendly collection of
hundreds of anecdotes, humorous stories, wild tales, and even some
surprising wisdom from the often wacky, but always wonderful, world
of the Lone Star State.
Wallace Chariton, a fifth generation native Texan and author of
several books on Texas, has carefully collected the best examples
of Texas fun and humor and put them all together in this book, the
ultimate collection of Texas humor.

anyone interested in country speak.
For about as long as there has been a Texas there have been Texas
mysteries, and many of them remain unsolved. What happened to the
documents captured in the Alamo? Does a ghost actually haunt the
state capitol in Austin? Did the U.S. Army secretly bury hundreds
of guns in North Texas after WWII? Was John Wilkes Booth killed or
did he escape and flee to Central Texas? The authors present the
known facts and circumstances of these and other mysteries.
Here in one convenient volume are the two earliest examples of the
ancient Greek novel.
'Chaireas and Kallirhoe', Chariton's story of love and adventure
(1st or 2nd century C.E.), is probably the oldest of the completely
preserved Greek novels. The last scholarly edition was published in
1938 (W.E. Blake, Oxford). Now a critical edition of Chariton
appears for the first time in the Bibliotheca Teubneriana, it is
based on a careful evaluation of the textual tradition, and takes
account of all the results of international research during the
last sixty years.
In the beginning it was happy trails. Then some dummy invented the
horseless carraige and things haven't been the same since. As
ribbons of concrete spread over the horse trails, so did the fun
and frustration. This book explores some of that highway fun, both
past and present. Included are unique pictures of strange vehicles,
early gas stations, convenience stores, the evolutions of the stop
light, unusual roadside signs, the Texas billboard hall of fame,
unusual accidents, strange things seen when driving, and much, much
more.

Chariton's "Callirhoe," subtitled "Love Story in Syracuse," is
the oldest extant novel. It is a fast-paced historical romance with
ageless charm.
Chariton narrates the adventures of an exceptionally beautiful
young bride named Callirhoe, beginning with her abduction by
pirates--adventures that take her as far as the court of the
Persian king Artaxerxes and involve shipwrecks, several ardent
suitors, an embarrassing pregnancy, the hazards of war, and a happy
ending. Animated dialogue captures dramatic situations, and the
novelist takes us on picturesque travels. His skill makes us
enthralled spectators of plots and counterplots, at trials and a
crucifixion, inside a harem, among the admiring crowd at weddings,
and at battles on land and sea.
This enchanting tale is here made available for the first time
in an English translation facing the Greek text. In his
Introduction G. P. Goold establishes the book's date in the first
century CE and relates it to other ancient fiction.
A trio of tales offering an eye-opening alternative view of ancient
Greece's literary culture.
A fascinating counterpoint to the monumental epics of ancient
Greece, Greek Fiction features three novelistic works written
between the first and fourth centuries AD. Chariton's
"Callirhoe"-perhaps the first novel ever written-is the stirring
tale of two star-crossed lovers who are torn apart when Callirhoe
is kidnapped and sold into slavery. Longus's "Daphnis and Chloe"
tells the story of a boy and girl-both abandoned at birth-who grow
up to fall in love and battle pirates. "Letters of Chion" is an
early thriller about tyranny and political assassination. Together
these works open a welcome window onto ancient Greece's
little-explored legacy of prose fiction.
