The Encyclopedia of Parenting Theory and Research (Hardcover, New): Charles A. Smith The Encyclopedia of Parenting Theory and Research (Hardcover, New)
Charles A. Smith
R2,528 Discovery Miles 25 280 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

While becoming a parent is relatively easy, parenting is a skill that is learned and improved over a lifetime. This reference book provides a comprehensive summary of what we know about parents and parent-child relationships. Through more than 240 alphabetically arranged entries, the volume synthesizes the present state of research on parenting. Each entry is written by an expert contributor and represents an authoritative view on a particular topic. Entries are related to child activity, child outcomes, child states, parent behaviors, parental situations, external and community concerns, systemic issues, the transition to parenthood, available resources, and various persons who have shaped our knowledge of parenting. The entries draw on information from a wide range of disciplines, including psychology, education, and sociology. Each entry includes a brief bibliography, and the volume closes with a selected list of works for further reading. The word parent is most often used to refer to a biological relationship with a child. But the word parent, like mother and father, can also invoke acts of caring, nurturing, and protecting. When we say, That child needs a father, we imply that the child needs a relationship with a man capable of fathering. This emphasizes a social and emotional relationship, not merely a biological one. Parenting means assuming responsibility for the long-term care of a child. Becoming a parent is relatively easy. But parenting is a skill that is learned and improved over a lifetime. Moreover, parenting is a skill that becomes more complex in response to the demands of a changing society. Some elements of successful parenting are relatively abstract and seem to remain fairly constant across different generations. But with the rise of new social problems and the proliferation of various threats to the integrity of the nuclear family, the parenting strategies of a generation ago are not necessarily effective today. Parenting has also received growing amounts of attention from researchers, and what was once considered chiefly an art is now also recognized for being a science. Our knowledge of parenting has increased significantly in the last few decades, and new developments continue to be made daily. This reference book provides a comprehensive summary of what we know about parents and the parent-child relationship. Through more than 240 alphabetically arranged entries, the volume synthesizes the present state of research on parenting. Each entry is written by an expert contributor and provides an authoritative overview of a particular topic. Entries are related to child activity, child outcomes, child states, parent behaviors, parental situations, external and community factors, systemic concerns, the transition to parenthood, available resources, and a number of persons who have added to our knowledge of the field. The entries draw on a wide range of disciplines, including psychology, education, and sociology. Each entry closes with a brief bibliography, and the volume concludes with a selected list of works for further reading.

The Joint Institute for Aeronautics and Acoustics at Stanford University was established in October 1973 to provide an academic environment for long-term cooperative research between Stanford and NASA Ames Research Center. Since its establishment, the In stitute has wnducted theoretical and experimental work in the areas of aerodynamics, acoustics, fluid mechanics, flight dynamics, guid ance and control, and human factors. This research has involved Stanford faculty, research associates, graduate students, and many distinguished visitors in collaborative efforts with the research staff of NASA Ames Research Center. The occasion of the Institute's tenth anniversary was used to reflect back on where that research has brought us, and to consider where our endeavors should be directed next. Thus, an International Symposium was held to review recent advances in the fields relevant to the activities of the Institute and to discuss the areas of research to be undertaken in the future. This anniversary was also chosen a.."1 an opportunity to honor one of the Institute's founders and its di rector, Professor Krishnamurty Karamcheti. It has been his creative inspiration that has provided the ideal research environment at the Joint Institute. The International Symposium on Recent Advances in Aero dynamics and Aconstics was held at Stanford University, Stanford, California, U.S.A., August 22-26, 198: . Thirty-five distinguished scientists were invited to present a comprehensive review on the fol lowing subject areas: unsteady aerodynamics, jets and shear layers, V /STOL aircraft aerodynamics, rotor dynamics and aerodynamics, ."

Excerpt from book: CATECHUMEN'S GUIDE. The following lectures will consist, as the reader is already aware, of brief explanations of the doctrines of Scripture, as they are laid down in Luther's Catechism? doctrines touching the duties which man owes to the Creator, to his fellow-men and himself; together with a practical application, shewing that all men are bound by the most solemn obligations, to act a very important part as moral beings. And may the Spirit of the Highest guide us in this momentous inquiry, and indelibly impress upon our understandings, by his sanctifying influence these illustrations of revealed truth. PART FIRST. The first part of the Catechism, as you perceive, includes the ten commandments ? and the inquiry that presents itself, before entering upon the explanation of these commandments, is, by whom were they communicated, and what is the character of that Being whose will they contain ? Q. What does the first part of the Catechism contain ? By whom were these communicated? 46 DIVINE PERFECTIONS., - The existence of a God, the Creator and Governor of the universe, is the fundamental doctrine of our blessed religion. This truth is plainly taught in the works of Nature, which indicate, so clearly, contrivance and design, that we are compelled to attribute them to an intelligent creating cause. And besides, we discover in the greatness of these works, the mighty power of Him who formed them, whilst theirtetanifest adaptation to some important and glorious end, bespeaks the wisdom of their author. But it has been reserved for revelation to teach us more respecting the divine character and intentions than the light of nature ever has, or ever could disclose. The Bible declares this God, whose existence is proclaimed by every object of creation, to be infinite, no...
