Great Expectations was first published as a weekly serial in All
the Year Round, December 1860 - August 1861. Its first appearance
in volume form was as three-volume novel, without illustrations, in
July 1861. A one-volume edition, the next year, preceded its
inclusion in the collected editions of Dickens's lifetime. The
three-volume 1861 edition is the basis of the present text: variant
readings, including those in manuscript and extant proofs, are
recorded in the textual apparatus, providing an unusually rich
source of information on Dickens's methods of composition. The
Introduction traces this process of composition and draws attention
to the two unperformed dramatic adaptations: the reading version
and the 1861 play version, made as a safeguard of copyright.
Appendices include the original ending, the author's notes, and two
textual examinations, one of the five so-called `editions' of 1861,
the other a comparison of the one-volume 1862 edition with the 1864
Library edition.
Dickens had already achieved renown with The Pickwick Papers. With
Oliver Twist his reputation was enhanced and strengthened. The
novel contains many classic Dickensian themes - grinding poverty,
desperation, fear, temptation and the eventual triumph of good in
the face of great adversity. Oliver Twist features some of the
author's most enduring characters, such as Oliver himself (who
dares to ask for more), the tyrannical Bumble, the diabolical
Fagin, the menacing Bill Sikes, Nancy and 'the Artful Dodger'. For
any reader wishing to delve into the works of the great Victorian
literary colossus, Oliver Twist is, without doubt, an essential
title.
A Christmas Carol - The Complete Text contains the full text of the
novel, with helpful annotations to explain characters, themes,
context and more! Plus, we've included Knowledge Organiser pages,
where all the key info is laid out in one handy place. And there
are discussion questions to help students dig deeper into the
novel. The CGP range for English Literature also includes a
matching Text Guide (9781782943099), which contains all the notes
and practice you need to really master A Christmas Carol!

Pip is a poor orphan, a boy with “no expectations†being raised
by his unkind sister and her husband in a small home on the marshes
of Kent. But when Pip meets the bizarre Miss Havisham and her
beautiful ward, Estella, he starts to yearn for a life as a
gentleman. However, Pip will discover that wealth and honesty do
not go hand in hand, and that kindness can be found in the most
surprising places. A love story, a mystery, and a sharp critique of
upper-class English society, Great Expectations remains one of
Dickens’s best-regarded works.
