BY THE NAME OF RICE: An Historical Sketch Of Deacon Edmund Rice, The Pilgrim (1594-1663), Founder Of The English Family Of Rice In The United States: And Of His Descendants To The Fourth Generation. Charles Elmer Rice Author of the History of the H-a Family, History of the Hole F d y in England and America, The Wrighb of Kclvedon Hallsm - S - 1 Batered according to Act of Chgreu in tbe yeu 1910, by CBulem Bbprcr Rice, in the o e of the Librarian of m e s a at Waahbgmm L i m k d o f w L i c h t h i r h w m b e r There is a good and sufficient reason or thii but it is too lengthyto explain M y in these pages. In brief, the effete elder branch ran out of male heirs in the year 1756 and it took a patent from the crown to keep up the title, by allowing the earldom to revert - to the heirs, male, rough Lady Cecil De Cardome1 Rice. Such a crisis in the Rice family will be quite unthinkable to one who reads further in this little book.

Excerpt from Chapter I
Jacob Hole and Barbara his wife sailed from Plymouth, England, in 1740 and landed after a tedious voyage of many weeks, in Philadelphia.
Just where these founders of the Hole family in America came from has never been known to their descendants. And it was not until the summer of 1900, when the writer was sent to Europe to procure data, search records and write a family history, that we so much as knew their nationality.
It had been a tradition in the family that Jacob Hole was German and came to America from Germany; yet no proof whatever had ever been produced to substantiate the claim or prove the theory. The various intermarriages into the best English families of Pennsylvania and Virginia seemed to indicate that the Holes were of English origin. A thorough search of English records and genealogies has clearly shown that the name is English, though of Norse origin, a visit to the English branches of the family, to the Estates and Freeholds belonging to them, has enabled the writer to give a tolerably complete and full account of the Holes in England and America. Devonshire, in the south-west of England has been the home of the Hole family for the last one thousand years. The Estate of St. Giles, near Barnstaple, in that county has been owned by Henry Hole until 1835, when the 20th Henry in succession died. By the ordinary computation of the length of a generation this would take us to the year 1175, A.D., when the first Henry Hole owned...

Windham Press is committed to bringing the lost cultural heritage of ages past into the 21st century through high-quality reproductions of original, classic printed works at affordable prices.
This book has been carefully crafted to utilize the original images of antique books rather than error-prone OCR text. This also preserves the work of the original typesetters of these classics, unknown craftsmen who laid out the text, often by hand, of each and every page you will read. Their subtle art involving judgment and interaction with the text is in many ways superior and more human than the mechanical methods utilized today, and gave each book a unique, hand-crafted feel in its text that connected the reader organically to the art of bindery and book-making.
We think these benefits are worth the occasional imperfection resulting from the age of these books at the time of scanning, and their vintage feel provides a connection to the past that goes beyond the mere words of the text.
