An illustrated guide
This concise 'handbook' provides an overview, supported by
numerous illustrations and diagrams, of the development of arms and
armour in Europe. The work is conveniently divided into sections,
notably 'The Age of Mail (1066-1277), ' 'The Transition Period
(1277-1410)' and 'Plate Armour (1410-1600).' Focus is also given to
the wearing of armour, its construction details, armour created for
war-horses and the period of history during which armour reached
its most decadent in appearance. This useful book concludes with an
examination of the weapons employed to accompany the defensive
armour worn in each period. It will be particularly useful to
modellers, re-enactors and those creating theatrical performances
and anyone interested in warfare in the medieval period and the
history of costume.
Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each
title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket; our
hardbacks are cloth bound and feature gold foil lettering on their
spines and fabric head and tail bands.
Originally published in 1938, this book presents a historical study
of the arms used by the British Army and Navy. The text
concentrates for the most part on the swords used by different
divisions, although sections are included on 'Belts, Slings,
Knots', 'Lance, Bayonet and Staff Weapons' and 'Muskets, Rifles,
and Carbines'. Numerous illustrative figures are also included,
together with a list of works consulted. This book will be of value
to anyone with an interest in military history and the historical
development of weapons.
Originally published in 1937, this book provides an authentic
sketch of the history of English gun production, from their first
use in the fourteenth century down to the time of Marlborough's
campaigns during the early part of the eighteenth century. At the
time of publication there had been relatively few historical
analyses of gun foundering, the preference being to examine their
use in battle. This book was useful in terms of giving readers a
collection of facts relating to the subject and outlining a
little-known branch of military history. It remains a fascinating
document, containing numerous illustrations, that will be of value
anyone with an interest in English history and the development of
guns.
