Charles Horton Cooley's account of human beings, their behavior,
and how they organize themselves has been praised for its
originality, and remains an underappreciated and much-cited classic
of sociology. Human Nature and the Social Order is a logically
composed book which straddles and to a degree transcends the
boundaries between philosophy, psychology and sociology. Cooley
wished to clarify the behavior of human beings, how they come to
interact and socialize with one another, and how they arrive at a
definition of themselves that is in harmony with their own
well-being and that of others. Later in the book, Cooley discusses
qualities which have been promoted or felt as necessary for humans
in civilized society. Good, conscientious and beneficent
leadership, the possession of a moral compass and conscience, and
the excellent values of freedom receive their own discussions with
positive and negative elements comprising the well-rounded
analyses.
This work remains a pioneer sociological treatise on American
culture. By understanding the individual not as the product of
society but as its mirror image, Cooley concludes that the social
order cannot be imposed from outside human nature but that it
arises from the self. Cooley stimulated pedagogical inquiry into
the dynamics of society with the publication of Human Nature and
the Social Order in 1902. Human Nature and the Social Order is
something more than an admirable ethical treatise. It is also a
classic work on the process of social communication as the "very
stuff" of which the self is made.
Harmony through Melody offers a robust, conservatory-style approach
to tonal music theory, focusing on Common Era classical works and
reaching far beyond basic rudiments. Charles Horton, David A.
Byrne, and Lawrence Ritchey develop techniques and strategies for
exploring the fundamental interaction of melody and counterpoint
with harmony, leading to a fuller understanding of melody within
harmonic progressions. This textbook present a step-by-step method
with more than 1400 musical examples from a variety of styles and
genres with class-room tested examples for study and suggested
assignments at the end of each chapter. Student assessments are
based on student writing and compositional exercises, and the
textbook feature a free, online workbook with additional material.

Anesthesia Crash Course is uniquely positioned to address the needs
of new trainees in anesthesia. This book is written in a
conversational tone, avoiding unnecessary jargon and distilling the
key concepts of anesthesia into easy-to-remember tidbits - an
approach in increasing demand by medical students and junior
physicians.
The audience for this book is chiefly new anesthesia residents,
interns, medical students who rotate through anesthesia services,
and nurse anesthetists. By demystifying the world of anesthesia, it
provides a welcome resource to medical students and RNs who are
considering additional training in this popular but poorly
understood specialty. Surgical residents who feel they're not up to
speed with what's happening on the other side of the "ether screen"
would certainly also benefit from reading Anesthesia Crash Course.
New anesthesia trainees face an extremely daunting learning curve.
As they progress through training, they will read longer and more
detailed treatises on every aspect of modern anesthesia. It is not
realistic to imagine that someone might finish such a book in the
first week of his or her training! Anesthesia Crash Course wil
serve as a bridge between a trainee's pre-anesthesia experience and
more formal training. It can be read in the last month of
internship, or in evenings while completing the first few weeks of
anesthesia training. It can also serve as a medical student's
accompaniment for a two-week anesthesia elective.
