1922. Writer of juvenile fiction and adult romance/adventure
stories, Altsheler's serial works cover the French-Indian War, the
American Revolution, the Texan War for Independence, the Civil War,
the settlement of the west, and World War I. In all, he wrote
nearly fifty books and countless short stories for magazines.
Altsheler insisted on historical accuracy in his books and in his
series of connected romances dealing with the Civil War he made a
concerted effort to balance both Northern and Southern points of
view. The Tree of Appomattox concludes the Civil War Series begun
with The Guns of Bull Run. See other titles by this author

1913. Written by John H. Goldfrap under the Howard Payson
pseudonym, you do not have to be a Boy Scout to enjoy these
fascinating and interesting stories. Any boy has the chance. Next
to the Manual itself, the books give an accurate impression of Boy
Scout activities, for they are educational and instructive. One of
the 14 volume scouting series, The Boy Scouts at the Panama Canal
is the authentic story of the great ditch. It is illustrated by
photographs of the Canal in the process of building.

CHAPTER III BEHIND THE FKONT ALL the afternoon, and all through the
night, the journey continued. And before many hours had elapsed the
spirit of the men had undergone a change. Not that they were any
the less anxious to get to the front, hut the cramped positions
they were in, the inability to lie down or even to sit down, and
the jolting and rocking of the train, made the journey not over
pleasant. Men began to grumble and complain. Strangely enough,
however, their complaints were not directed at those who had
arranged for them to travel so uncomfortably, but against the
Kaiser and the Germans who had rendered it necessary for such
arrangements to be made. "Wait till Oi git hold o' thim boirds,'
exclaimed one big Irish corporal. "Oi'll make thim sorry fer makin'
a sardine out o' me." "A sardine is not in it with us," replied one
of the others. "Ye're roight," exclaimed the big Irishman. "Fer
meself Oi'd feel lonesome in a sardine can afther bein' used to
this." A laugh greeted this remark and momentarily served to
lighten the men's spirits. Not for long, however, for every one was
now tired, to say nothing of being hungry. All they had had to eat
were the few rations they had been able to carry with them. When
men are tired and hungry they are usually irritable as well, and
the grumbling and complaining soon started afresh. It is curious
how soldiers love to complain, "grouse," the British call it. They
grumble and kick at the most trivial things, and to hear them one
would often think they were on the verge of revolt. Let anything
really important happen, however, and their attitude changes in the
twinkling of an eye. If a fight starts they instantly forget all
their petty troubles, they cannot obey orders quickly enough, and
their disregard of pain and ...
