Race complicates our relationships, even when we reject racism and
seek to walk a better path together. How can we get our
thinking-and our conversations-unstuck from entrenched patterns? In
this book, four experts in psychology and social work present a
model for how to build and deepen the cross-race relationships we
want. The starting place, they testify, must be a biblical
understanding of the problem of racial disunity, grounded in the
grand narrative of Scripture, followed by practical insights about
psychology and social behavior. This book is the culmination of
professional-but also deeply personal-conversations the authors
have had with each other, wrestling together over current events,
their own stories, and their roles in the healing process. They
combine biblical teachings with psychological science to help
Christians develop the skills to discuss race and ethnicity. In
each chapter, you will be guided through essential information,
biblical examples, case studies, activities, and journaling
exercises to prepare you to practice healing conversations. Using
research from psychology, attachment theory, and emotionally
focused therapy, this process will build your knowledge,
self-awareness, other-awareness, and specific relational skills.
Jesus embodied love, challenged injustice, welcomed those rejected
by society, and engaged in healing conversations with everyone he
encountered. The insights and practices in Healing Conversations on
Race will help Christians grow in Christlikeness and follow his
example.
This book explores the interaction of the EU in Greece,
Slovenia, Croatia, and Macedonia in three key policy sectors
cohesion, border managements and the environment and assesses the
degree to which the European Union s engagement with the
democracies of South East Europe has promoted Europeanization and
Multi-Level Governance.
Although there is a tendency to view the Balkans as peripheral,
this book argues that South East European states are central to
what the EU is and aspires to become, and goes to the heart of many
of the key issues confronting the EU. It compares changing modes of
governance in the three policy areas selected because they are
contentious issues in domestic politics and have trans-boundary
policy consequences, in which there is significant EU involvement.
The book draws on over 100 interviews conducted to explore actor
motivation, preferences and perceptions in the face of pressure to
adapt from the EU and uses Social Network Analysis. Timely and
informative, this book considers broader dilemmas of integration
and enlargement at a time when the EU s effectiveness is under
close scrutiny.

Five leaders of business, television, education, government, and
labor address themselves in this book to the problems concerning
their fields and consequently concerning the entire American
citizenry. With an eye on the past history of the United States,
these men discuss the various problems of the present and future
and how we are to cope with them using the lessons and values of
the past, as well as recognizing new concepts and ideas that have
arisen. Karl R. Bopp, former President of the Federal Reserve Bank
of Philadelphia, concerns him self with the problem of eliminating
unemployment of men and capital without resorting to total economic
planning. Frank Stanton, former President of the Columbia
Broadcasting System, asks who shall determine what the people see
on television and whether there is an alternative to "the public
verdict" of applause or rejection. Earl J. McGrath, former U. S.
Commissioner of Higher Education, raises questions relating to the
performance of students and teachers at all levels of our
educational establishment. Who should go to college? What
differences in curricula should be encouraged? What practices and
conditions will produce those intellectual and moral qualities we
desire in our citizenry? Milton Katz, former Director of
International Legal Studies at Harvard University, discusses the
problem of increasing public understanding of the government's
conduct of foreign affairs. What is the proper "mix" of
professionally trained public servants and talented political
"transients"? How can public antipathy to expanding "bureaucracy"
be overcome in the interest of raising the quality of our foreign
affairs personnel. George W. Taylor, Professor of Industry at the
University of Pennsylvania and a member of President Kennedy's
Advisory Committee on Labor Management Relations, notes that the
"creative responses" required to maintain the nation's economic
equilibrium run "deeply against the grain of our traditional
thinking." How shall we respond to conflicts of private interests
(labor and management) that pose threats to, or actually damage,
the general welfare? Do we need institutional arrangements to
defend the public interest when great economic powers collide, and,
if so, what should be the role of government in these arrangements?
These five men do not purport to know all of the answers to the
great issues of our society. Implicit in their discussions is an
invitation to the reader to enter into a dialogue with them, to
examine his or her own ideas while scrutinizing theirs, to seek out
further data, to confirm, to refute, or to modify. The State of the
Nation: Retrospect and Prospect is an invaluable book for those
interested in the problems of society. It is a summons to Americans
to realize their responsibilities and privileges as citizens of a
democracy in the permanent pursuit of perfection.
Originally published as a multi-volume series, "The Fundamentals"
is one of the finest and most widely distributed statements of
Christian doctrine ever produced. Written to combat the inroads of
liberalism into the Christian church, "The Fundamentals" literally
stirred the world in defense of the historic Christian faith. These
articles blend a "common-sense" doctrinal approach with personal
application built upon the foundation of the inspired and inerrant
Scriptures.
"The Fundamentals" defends the deity of Christ, the inspiration of
the Scriptures, the bodily resurrection of Christ, and many other
foundational truths. These statements also apply biblical
Christianity to the wider problems of life and culture by
emphasizing the essentials and de-emphasizing the nonessentials.
This balance in both doctrine and application has established "The
Fundamentals" as a classic of Christian literature.
