The tension between nationalism and internationalism has been a major feature of world politics since the end of the Cold War. The book puts forward a critical reading of the term "post-Cold War" and what it implies - clearly its most immediate interpretation is the disappearance of the Walls and Iron Curtains and the consequent shift away from a global bipolar power structure and we hope a nuclear arms race. However, more broadly, one might take the term to mean the late 20th and early 21st century, allowing us to talk more generally about the changes to the world market economy, the strengthening of regional units, technological change, the growth in international organizations and so on. Thirdly, there is the implication that this is an era in which the world finds itself paying renewed attention to matters that may have been neglected during the Cold War - nationalism being a major one.
