Pope John Paul II was well known as the most visible and
politically active pope of all time. His positions, rooted in deep
personal integrity, variously pleased and angered citizens both on
the right and the left. His inaugural appearance as pope in his
native Poland helped spur Solidarity and the fall of the communist
bloc. He chided George W. Bush and Western world leaders for
excessive capitalist policies, citing their actions as factors in
deepening world poverty. He took exception to Latin American
liberation theology, warning its advocates that it allied itself
with Marxist principles. His positions on family, sexuality, and
reproductive issues have been welcomed by many but viewed as out of
step with contemporary realities by others, including many church
members. To date, Benedict XVI has demonstrated continuity with the
conservative agenda of his mentor and predecessor John Paul II and
is quite willing to speak his mind as well. This compact anthology
is the first book to focus on the political legacies of Popes John
Paul II and Benedict XVI. It brings together articles by scholars,
journalists, papal observers, and, most important, the popes
themselves to present this legacy from a variety of viewpoints,
giving the reader a balanced and well-considered portrait of John
Paul II and Benedict XVI's men, as world citizens, as religious
leaders, and as political figures. Whether addressing the United
Nations, national leaders, bishops, the faithful, or the public at
large, these popes have knowingly made pronouncements intended to
influence the secular realm and public policy worldwide as well as
to guide the one billion members of the Roman Catholic Church. Many
welcome their strong moral voices; others resent their attempts to
influence social policy as political meddling. Readers may judge
whether these popes have prudently advanced their causes or perhaps
diminished their influence by such strong public pronouncements of
their political positions.
Roman Catholicism in the United States: A Thematic History takes
the reader beyond the traditional ways scholars have viewed and
recounted the story of the Catholic Church in America. The
collection covers unfamiliar topics such as anti-Catholicism, rural
Catholicism, Latino Catholics, and issues related to the
establishment of diplomatic relations between the Vatican and the
U.S. government. The book continues with fascinating discussions on
popular culture (film and literature), women religious, and the
work of U.S. missionaries in other countries. The final section of
the books is devoted to Catholic social teaching, tackling
challenging and sometimes controversial subjects such as the
relationship between African American Catholics and the Communist
Party, Catholics in the civil rights movement, the abortion debate,
issues of war and peace, and Vatican II and the American Catholic
Church. Roman Catholicism in the United States examines the history
of U.S. Catholicism from a variety of perspectives that transcend
the familiar account of the immigrant, urban parish, which served
as the focus for so many American Catholics during the nineteenth
and first half of the twentieth centuries.
Who are American Catholics and what do they believe and practice?
How has American Catholicism influenced and been influenced by
American culture and society? This book examines the history of
American Catholics from the colonial era to the present, with an
emphasis on changes and challenges in the contemporary church.
Chester Gillis chronicles America Catholics: where they have come
from, how they have integrated into American society, and how the
church has influenced their lives. He highlights key events and
people, examines data on Catholics and their relationship to the
church, and considers the church's positions and actions on
politics, education, and gender and sexuality in the context of its
history and doctrines. This second edition of Roman Catholicism in
America pays particular attention to the tumultuous past twenty
years and points toward the future of the religion in the United
States. It examines the unprecedented crisis of sexual abuse by
priests-the legal, moral, financial, and institutional
repercussions of which continue to this day-and the bishops' role
in it. Gillis also discusses the election of Pope Francis and the
controversial role Catholic leadership has played in American
politics.
