Compared with other wireless communication technologies, such as Bluetooth, WiFi, and UWB, ZigBee (R) is a far more reliable, affordable, and energy-efficient option. It is also the only global wireless communication standard for easily deployed, low-power consumption products. ZigBee (R) Network Protocols and Applications provides detailed descriptions of ZigBee network protocols and explains how to set up and develop your own ZigBee-based customized applications with step-by-step instructions. Starting with a brief introduction to near-field communications, low-power communications, and related protocols, it discusses ZigBee architectures, standards, and protocols. It also addresses potential issues such as power management, security, reliability, quality of service, topology control, MAC routing, and transport protocols. Emphasizing development tools that are based on readily available commercial kits, the book illustrates ZigBee applications across a wide range of fields. Each chapter presents the contributions of a different group of experts from around the world. The book is organized into five major parts: Introduces near-field communications (NFC), low-power communications, and ZigBee along with related protocols such as Bluetooth, WiFi, UWB, and Wireless USB Describes ZigBee architectures, standards, and protocols Examines ZigBee performance improvement and addresses potential issues Illustrates ZigBee applications across a range of fields-explaining how to develop ZigBee applications that are based on commercially available kits and hardware Compares and contrasts ZigBee with 6LoWPAN, Z-Wave, Wireless Hart, and RFID Providing step-by-step instruction on how to set up and develop ZigBee-based applications, this book is a must-read for researchers and engineers. Supplying the required foundation and network protocols, it is also s

The exponential increase in mobile device users and high-bandwidth applications has pushed the current 3G and 4G wireless networks to their capacity. Moreover, it is predicted that mobile data traffic will continue to grow by over 300 percent by 2017. To handle this spectacular growth, the development of improved wireless networks for the future has been of paramount importance. The Future of Wireless Networks: Architectures, Protocols, and Services discusses the future of wireless networks, including the emerging network architectures, underlying protocols, services, and applications. The first part of the book focuses on new wireless network architectures that are being developed, such as mobile SDN, wireless local area networks (i.e., 802.11), and wireless sensor networks for the Smart Grid. In the second part of the book, the authors discuss the new protocols and enabling technologies for the different wireless network architectures. These include wireless MAC protocols, resource allocation in cognitive radio networks, multicast transmission, and femtocells, which provide enhanced indoor coverage and increased network capacity. The book's final section discusses several new services and applications that are springing up, such as multisource selection for wireless peer-to-peer (P2P) networks and device-to-device (D2D) content sharing, which reduces duplicated downloads of the same contents on cellular links by offloading the traffic onto other networks. This section also covers the next generation of wireless security and privacy control techniques that service providers can use to ensure that their infrastructures and services are adequately protected against all kinds of threats.

The annual International Conference on Access Networks (AccessNets) aims to provide a forum that brings together researchers and scientists from academia as well as man- ers and engineers from industry to meet and exchange ideas and recent work on all aspects of access networks. AccessNets 2008 was the third edition of this event, which was successfully held in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA, during October 15-17, 2008. The conference consisted of two keynote addresses, five invited talks, seven technical sessions, and two panel sessions. Leonid Kazovsky from Stanford University and Kevin Schneider, Chief Technology Officer of ADTRAN, delivered their exciting keynote - dresses on "Future Evolution of Broadband Access," and "Carrier Ethernet and the Evo- ing Access Networks," respectively. Maurice Gagnaire, Martin Reisslein, Martin Maier, Paolo Giacomazzi, and John M. Cioffi gave interesting invited talks on different research topics on access networks. The technical papers presented original and fundamental - search advances in the area of access networks, while the panels focused on the interesting topics of "Fiber Assisted Wireless for Broadband Access Networks and Dynamic Spectrum Management (DSM) Successes. " These conference proceedings include all the technical papers that were presented at AccessNets 2008. We hope that it will become a useful reference for researchers and practitioners working in the area of access networks.
