Adapting to the Stage - Theatre and the Work of Henry James (Paperback): Chris Greenwood Adapting to the Stage - Theatre and the Work of Henry James (Paperback)
Chris Greenwood
R1,071 Discovery Miles 10 710 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This title was first published in 2000: The American novelist and playwright, Henry James, was drawn to the theatre and the shifting conventions of drama throughout his writing career. This study demonstrates that from the 1890s onwards James concentrated on adapting his novels and stories to and from the stage, and increasingly employed metaphors that spoke of novel-writing in terms of playwriting. Christopher Greenwood argues that these metaphors helped James to conceive himself as an artist who composed characters dramatically and visually, and in doing so sets his novels significantly apart from those of his contemporaries. In the introduction to the first part of the book, Greenwood examines James's career within the context of contemporary European and North American theatre, providing an appraisal of what James gained from contemporary theatre, his position in that milieu, and what he brought to it. Part 2 of the book focuses on two novels: "The Other House" and "The Spoils of Poynton", both of which illustrate the ways in which James used the mechanism of contemporary theatre to communicate a character's personality. Discussion of these two works is used to throw light on similar concerns that develop in James's later writing.

Forty Six - The Birth of Porsche Motorsport: Bill Wagenblatt Forty Six - The Birth of Porsche Motorsport
Bill Wagenblatt; Contributions by Doug Nye, Sean Cridland, William Edgar, Gary Horstkorta, …
R3,920 Discovery Miles 39 200 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The definitive history of one of Porsche's most beloved and competitive racing champions. Forty Six tells the unlikely underdog story of the car that scored Porsche's first racing victories and helped establish their commercial success: the 356/2 063. Beginning at the company's post-World War II nadir, Bill Wagenblatt illuminates how Porsche rose from the ashes to overcome multiple trials and near-disasters to compete with this vehicle at Le Mans, the Liege-Rome-Liege Rally, and Montlhéry, where they set new racing records in the 1950s. Wagenblatt follows the tale into the twenty-first century, making clear how the 356/2 063 helped set Porsche Motorsport on its way to becoming the juggernaut that we know today. Including a wealth of archival photos and documents that have never been before published, along with a unique look at the car's US history, Forty Six is the definitive history of one of Porsche's most beloved and competitive racing champions.
