All in a Day's Work - 30 Years as a Brighouse Bobby (Paperback): Chris Helme All in a Day's Work - 30 Years as a Brighouse Bobby (Paperback)

During the 1950s, Chris Helme was often asked by relatives: 'What do you want to be when you grow up?' A policeman was always his answer. A child of the Fifties, he was brought up to respect the local police who seemed to know everyone. Suffering from colour blindness and short of a few O-Levels, Helme was finally accepted to serve in Leeds City police; however, he joined the police in Bradford a year later. By 1975, he was in the West Yorkshire Police achieving his life's ambition by serving his hometown of Brighouse and was the local policeman on the same housing estates that he grew up on. All in a Day's Work: 30 Years as Brighouse Bobby is his journey to achieving that ambition culminating with being awarded the British Empire Medal for services to his community in 1990. A local bobby had to deal with everything that happened on his 'patch'. This book takes the reader through a catalogue of sad, humorous, and almost unbelievable incidents in the life of a local policeman.

Brighouse Through Time provides a unique opportunity to look, not only at the present day town centre that many readers will be familiar with, but also how many parts appeared particularly during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The contrasting images of historical sepia images with those full colour images of the twentieth century is an exciting innovation from books of a similar style of the 1970s and 1980s. This book is not meant to be purely historical, but also an insight and an opportunity to see 'snapshots' in time, which for older readers will evoke many memories from their own childhood days. Whereas younger readers have the opportunity of seeing Brighouse's many changes, and how the town centre has evolved over the last century, a process that is forever ongoing.

This fascinating collection of over 200 archive photographs illustrates some of the historical developments which have shaped the town of Brighouse and its surrounding communities. The Industrial Revolution and the coming of the Canal Age brought new prosperity to the area, and this book describes the effects of industrialisation on the town and the people who helped to bring it about, as well as the industries themselves. Informative and detailed captions bring additional colour to the images, exploring the buildings, transport and shops of Brighouse and its surrounding settlements, as well as the close-knit communities which have formed the heart of the area. This book will rekindle fond memories of the past for anyone who has lived or worked in Brighouse, and will delight those who want to find out more about the colourful history of the town.
