This comparative analysis of growth, structural change and labour
market dynamics in the Greater Mekong countries (Yunnan Province in
China, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Lao PDR and Myanmar) of
Southeast Asia is the first of its kind. It explores economic
integration and cooperation, the possibilities for improving the
functioning of labour markets and facilitating mutually beneficial
labour flows in the region. The book begins with a comparative
overview of policy reforms, economic performance and structural
changes, focusing on economic relations in the Greater Mekong
countries. It then examines the salient features of labour market
structures and policies, patterns of cross-border migration, and
information systems, paying attention to the similarities and
differences between countries. It is especially timely in the
context of economic transition from socialist systems in the three
Indochina countries, the ongoing policy reforms in Yunnan Province
and Myanmar, and in light of the Asian financial crisis in shaping
growth trends. The analysis yields policy recommendations for
improvement in labour market performance. The book will be of great
interest to development and labour economists and those working in
the field of Asian studies, as well as to policymakers.
This fascinating study compares and contrasts the immense internal
migration movements in China and Indonesia. Over the next two
decades, approximately two-thirds of the rural labour force is
expected to migrate, transforming their respective societies from
primarily rural to urban based. Whilst both countries face similar
challenges as hundreds of millions of people move, the policies
implemented and their consequences are very different. Using an
extensive range of qualitative and quantitative data, the
contributors explore the impact of migration on migrants and their
families, as well as the rural communities they leave behind and
the urban communities they enter. They discover that migrants earn
less and face discrimination in the urban labour market, although
more so in China where there are greater restrictions. However
migration contributes to a more equal distribution of income in
urban China and to lowering poverty in rural China, and migrants
fare better on health and poverty indicators in Indonesia. The Great
Migration will strongly appeal to researchers, economists and
sociologists with a special interest in migration and development
studies. Policy-makers in both China and Indonesia will also find
much to fascinate them within this highly original book.
The book deals with the transformation of labor markets in Indonesia over thirty years of New Order government under President Soeharto. It traces the impact of rapid economic growth on employment, wages and labor productivity in an initially poor labor surplus economy. Key elements of the process include a growing industrial and informal sector work force, rising labor incomes, increasing mobility of rural labor, regional integration and greater female participation in the economy.

Indonesia enters the new millennium at a time of transition. It has
experienced several crises - in particular the economic crisis of
1997-98, a severe intensification of its environmental degradation,
and more recently the East Timor crisis, the ongoing Aceh demand
for independence, the change of government from the autocratic
Soeharto regime to one democratically elected and under the
leadership of President Abdurrahman Wahid, and the outbreak of a
number of violent communal conflicts. These crises were separate
but have interlinked social and political dynamics. This major
volume is the first wide-ranging analysis of recent developments.
It analyses the social and political dimensions of reformation:
poverty and income, environment and livelihood, civil society and
legal institutions, and Islam and politics. Contributors include
Indonesian and Australian scholars from a range of social science
disciplines.
