When a group of international activists arrive on the Faroe
Islands, intent on stopping the traditional whale hunts, tensions
between islanders and protestors run high. And when a woman is
found viciously murdered only hours after a violent confrontation,
the circumstances seem purposely designed to increase animosity
between the two sides. As English DI Jan Reyna and local detective
Hjalti Hentze investigate, it becomes increasingly clear that the
murder has other, more sinister aspects to it, and that crucial
evidence is being hidden. Neither policeman knows who to trust, or
how far some people might go to defend their beliefs.
When long-buried skeletal remains are unearthed at an isolated farm on the island of Boršoy, Hjalti Hentze is charged with investigating the death. But as Hentze s investigation turns to the commune which occupied the farm in the 1970s, Jan Reyna discovers a connection to the death of his mother and to long-repressed memories from his childhood. Increasingly driven to exorcise his personal demons, Reyna pursues an ever-darker conspiracy of murder and abuse spanning four decades, from the Faroes to Denmark and back. However, as Hentze puts the same pieces together, he has a growing realisation that Reyna may be about to follow a course of action from which there can be no return.
