They were among the sporting elite of 1914 - the stars of the
Northern Union - idolised by thousands of enthusiastic men, women
and children up and down the land. Yet despite their heroic status
in what was soon to become known as rugby league, these warriors of
the playing field were willing to sacrifice their careers - and
then lives - on the World War One killing fields, for King and
Country. Other sports have honoured their Great War fallen over
these past 100 years, producing Rolls of Honour to ensure that
their ultimate bravery is never forgotten; not so rugby league -
until now. The Greatest Sacrifice - Fallen Heroes of the Northern
Union - rights that wrong. It tells the story of talented sportsmen
who, when war was declared on 4 August 1914, duly departed for
France, Belgium and beyond, never again to see the rugby league
towns and grounds they once so famously graced. Among those who
fell were three members of Great Britain's 1914 summer tour to
Australia and New Zealand. A number of other former internationals
died too, as did many more who had earned top domestic honours with
their clubs. Some of the youngest players were just embarking on
professional careers and therefore never able to fulfil their
potential. Each player featured has a different tale to tell - from
childhood to rugby stardom to enlistment into the British Army and,
finally, the greatest sacrifice of all.
Improving health in populations in which health is poor is a
complex process. This book argues that the traditional government
approach of exhorting individuals to live healthier lifestyles is
not enough - action to promote public health needs to take place
not just through public agencies, but also by engaging community
assets and resources in their broadest sense. The book reports
lessons from the experience of planning, establishing and
delivering such action by the five-year Sustainable Health Action
Research Programme (SHARP) in Wales. It critically examines the
experience of SHARP in relation to current literature on policy;
community health and health inequalities; and action research. The
authors make clear how this regional development has produced
opportunities for developing general concepts and theory about
community-based policy developments that are relevant across
national boundaries and show that complex and sustained community
action, and effective local partnership, are fundamental components
of the mix of factors required to address health inequalities
successfully. The book concludes by indicating the connections
between SHARP and earlier traditions of community-based action, and
by arguing that we need to be bolder in our approaches to
community-based health improvement and more flexible in our
understanding of the ways in which knowledge and inform
developments in health policy. The book will be of interest to
practitioners and activists working in community-based projects;
students in community development, health studies and medical
sociology; professionals working in health promotion, community
nursing and allied areas; and policy makers working at local,
regional and national levels.
What do national dementia strategies, constantly evolving policy
and ongoing funding difficulties mean for people living well with
dementia? Adopting a broad and inclusive approach, Shibley Rahman
presents a thorough critical analysis of existing dementia policy,
and tackles head-on current and controversial topics at the
forefront of public and political debate, such as diagnosis in
primary care, access to services for marginalised groups, stigma
and discrimination, integrated care, personal health budgets,
personalised medicine and the use of GPS tracking. Drawing on a
wealth of diverse research, and including voices from all reaches
of the globe, he identifies current policy challenges for living
well with dementia, and highlights pockets of innovation and good
practice to inform practical solutions for living better with
dementia in the future. A unique and cohesive account of where
dementia care practice and policy needs to head, and why, and how
this can be achieved, this is crucial reading for dementia care
professionals, service commissioners, public health officials and
policy makers, as well as academics and students in these fields.

In 2003, Pharrell Williams was responsible for (by performing or
producing) 43 per cent of all the music played on radio across the
USA, and 20 per cent in the UK. His prolific and varied
collaborations with scores of the best-known musicians of the
twenty-first century have earned Pharrell millions of radio plays,
as well as album sales, songwriter credits and dollars. In 2013-14
alone, Pharrell has enjoyed two million-selling singles (in the
same month, unbelievably), for the tracks 'Get Lucky' and 'Happy' -
the latter earning an Oscar nomination for Best Song. Since 2001,
Pharrell has established himself as a respected, and ambitious,
musician, composer, fashion designer, businessman, charity-owner
and 'universalist', whose star is showing no signs of falling back
down to earth.
