English summary: JOSEPH: Chosen among His BrothersAt the age of
seventeen he certainly did not lack in self-assurance, dreaming
that even the sun, moon, and stars threw themselves to the ground
in front of him. His father's favorite, hated by his brothers;
betrayed and sold to Egypt yet already back on his way to the top,
held in high regard by Potiphar his master, fervently desired by
his mistress, who brought disaster upon him; a have-not from
Canaan, raised to the highest honors by Pharao; a man whom fortune
did not abandon even in times of misfortune. The book traces
Joseph's literary biography in the Pentateuch. It examines the life
of Joseph and his brothers in the light of historical facts,
searches for the author of this masterpiece of Hebrew narrative
art, and looks for the intended readership. A separate chapter
illuminates exemplarily the reception of Joseph's story in Judaism,
Christianity, and Islam, as well as in the arts and literature.
German text.
English summary: NOAH: The Story of a SurvivorNoah built the ark,
in which he survived the deluge together with his immediate family
and numerous animals representing every species. With the figure of
Noah the history of mankind begins anew. Noah's story is about the
greatest catastrophe, but it is also about life and survival. It
combines motives of doom and symbols of life such as the ark as a
place of shelter, the dove with the olive branch as an image of
peace, and the rainbow as a sign of the covenant and a pledge for
the world's preservation. Catastrophe and salvation are merged in
this biblical narrative to become a single theme - and it is the
one singular God who brings the two together. In this way the story
of Noah becomes also a pressing question to God himself. German
text.
So
