With the figure of Noah the history of mankind begins anew. Noah's story is about the greatest catastrophe, but it is also about life and survival. It combines motives of doom and symbols of life such as the ark as a place of shelter, the dove with the olive branch as an image of peace, and the rainbow as a sign of the covenant and a pledge for the world's preservation. Catastrophe and salvation are merged in this biblical narrative to become a single theme - and it is the one singular God who brings the two together.
