The philosophically most challenging science today, arguably, is no longer physics but biology. It is hardly an exaggeration to state that Charles Darwin has shaped modern evolutionary biology more significantly than anyone else. Moreover, since Darwin's day, philosophers and scientists have realized the enormous philosophical potential of Darwinism and have tried to expand his insights well beyond the limits of biology. However, no consensus has been achieved. The aim of this collection of essays is to revive a comprehensive discussion of the meaning and the philosophical implications of "Darwinism." The contributors to Darwinism and Philosophy are international scholars from the fields of philosophy, science, and history of ideas. A strength of this collection is that it brings together sustained reflection from American and Continental philosophical traditions. The conclusions of the contributors vary, but taken together their essays successfully map the problems of interpreting "Darwinism."

Is it merely a matter of taste or convention to consider something right or wrong? Or can we find good reasons for our values and judgements that are independent of culture and tradition? The problem is as old as philosophy itself; and after more than two millennia of scholarly debate, there seems no end to the controversy. But Christian Illies suggests that powerful new forms of transcendental argument (a philosophical tool known since antiquity) may offer a long-sought cornerstone for morality.

Im Sinne dieses Verdikts hat sich die Architekturmoderne radikal von der klassizistischen Tradition abgewandt, in der die antike Baukunst als Schulung, Folie und Muster galt, indem man ihre Formen, Strukturen und Proportionen formalästhetisch analysierte und nachahmte. Von Architekten wurden Letztere lebhaft diskutiert, bis die Moderne jede Beschäftigung mit der Antike „untersagte“.Der Band „Architektur, Atmosphäre, Wahrnehmung“ versammelt nun zehn Beiträge, die wieder alle –mehr oder weniger intensiv – als Ausgangsbasis die Villenbriefe nutzen, allerdings nicht, um mit ihnen einen formalästhetischen Zugriff auf die Antike wiederzubeleben, sondern, weil der von Plinius vorgeführte und in der Forschung bis dato vernachlässigte Blick auf die römische Villa unter dem Aspekt einer sequentiellen Sinnlichkeit eine „Chance für das Bauen heute“ ist.Im Ergebnis kann man festhalten: Egal ob man Architekturstudenten nach Rom schickt oder nicht – in jedem Fall sollte man sie Plinius lesen lassen.

This beautifully compact book - the combined discourse of a moral philosopher and an architect - provides us with a parti pris for contemplating the often contradictory interplay of ethics and aesthetics in the generation and perception of architectural form. The authors jointly acknowledge the challenges poised by the conflict between raw instrumentality and the nuances of environmental culture. In so doing they identify six ethical categories which have the capacity to impact fundamental issues pertaining to the genesis of built form and, similarly, a set of values with regard to function, context, time and intellect, which we may discern either together or separately in our reception of architecture.
