The four countries represented in this volume are East Asian middle
powers with strategic constraints upon their traditional security
policymaking. These middle powers have pursued diplomatic
activities raising their international profile or footprint, and
advancing their national interest, through normative foreign policy
and humanitarian channels, including peacebuilding, development,
and human security. In each case, therefore, there is a happy
coincidence of the national interest of the middle power expressed
though certain diplomatic "niches," and benefit to regional
partners in peace and development. The Niche Diplomacy of Asian
Middle Powers seeks to uncover the unique contributions of Asian
middle powers to the furtherance of humanitarian and human-related
policymaking, including the promotion of peace, development and
democracy long associated with middle-powerism, with particular
emphasis on their involvement in the Southeast Asian subregion.
Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan have made Southeast Asia a focus for
their attempts to get more "bang for their foreign policy buck" (or
Yen or Won) and have adopted similar normatively justified
variations on the theme of "new Southern policies." Meanwhile,
Thailand looks to play a variety of middle power roles within a
region where it is a major actor.
The Power of the Ballot Box analyzes the impact on Taiwanese
politics of the "Third Wave" of democratization that swept across
East Asia in the last decades of the twentieth century. Christian
Schafferer's work looks beyond regional and global causes to
pinpoint the true indigenous foundations of Taiwan's-and on a
broader scale East Asia's-political development, and examines the
pivotal importance of Taiwanese local elections in the island's
democratization process. Based on extensive research and in-depth
interviews with leading Taiwanese politicians and political
scientists, the book provides a detailed history of Taiwan's
electoral experience from the turn of the twentieth century,
through the Kuomintang regime, to the present day. This is
supplemented by a focused case study of the watershed 1997
Taiwanese local elections and their profound impact on the
Taiwanese political landscape.
At the end of the last century, political marketing appeared to
have become a global phenomenon with an increasing number of
electoral campaigns resembling those of the United States.
Comparative research has shown the existence of a so-called
'Americanization' of election campaign practices. This book
examines the nature of electoral campaigns in East and Southeast
Asia. Based on the analyses of developments in Japan, Taiwan, South
Korea, Malaysia, and the Philippines, it examines whether there is
an 'Asian style' of election campaigning. Contributing to the
fields of media studies and comparative politics, the book offers
an insight into the various changes in election campaigning that
occurred in the East and Southeast Asia during the process of
democratization and modernization. It sheds new light on the causes
and consequences of the worldwide proliferation of US election
campaigning and provides the academic world with previously
unpublished material on the electoral strategies of Asian political
parties.
