Ritual, Heritage and Identity - The Politics of Culture and Performance in a Globalised World (Paperback): Christiane Brosius,... Ritual, Heritage and Identity - The Politics of Culture and Performance in a Globalised World (Paperback)
Christiane Brosius, Karin M. Polit
R1,520 Discovery Miles 15 200 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book explores the importance of ritual and ritual theory to discourses of authenticity and originality, thereby deepening our insight into concepts of cultural heritage, identity and nation in a globalised world. The volume is the first interdisciplinary attempt to understand the significance of rituals and related performative traditions in the creation of grounded cultural identities, 'home' and heritage as geographically experienceable locations. It assembles perspectives from social and cultural anthropology, performance studies, education and arts that can deal with the politics of revitalisation and preservation of ritualised traditions. While some chapters in this book emphasise on the ritualisation of cultural heritage by concentrating on power relations and politics, as well as actual processes of identification, especially for marginalised ethnic groups or migrant communities, others explore how rituals as intangible heritage are strategically employed by different groups all over the world to make their claims public and to improve and negotiate their position on a local, national or global platform. This book recognises ritualised performances as transnational and cross-cultural phenomena, which are not only tied to and defined via national territories and identities but which also demand new theoretical and methodological approaches towards the discussion of rituals and heritage.

India's Middle Class - New Forms of Urban Leisure, Consumption and Prosperity (Paperback): Christiane Brosius India's Middle Class - New Forms of Urban Leisure, Consumption and Prosperity (Paperback)
Christiane Brosius
R899 Discovery Miles 8 990 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book examines the complexities of lifestyles of the upwardly mobile middle classes in India in the context of economic liberalisation in the new millennium, by analysing new social formations and aspirations, modes of consumption and ways of being in contemporary urban India. Rich in ethnographic material, the work is based on empirical case-studies, research material, and illustrations. Offering a model of how urban cosmopolitan India might be studied and understood in a transnational and transcultural context, the book takes the reader through three panoramic landscapes: new 'world-class' real estate advertising, a unique religious leisure site - the Akshardham Cultural Complex, and the world of themed weddings and beauty/wellness, all responses to India's new middle classes' tryst with cosmopolitanism. The work will be of particular interest to scholars and researchers in sociology, South Asian studies, media studies, anthropology and urban studies as also those interested in religion, performance and rituals, diaspora, globalisation and transnational migration.

Repetition, Recurrence, Returns - How Cultural Renewal Works (Hardcover): Joan Ramon Resina, Christoph Wulf Repetition, Recurrence, Returns - How Cultural Renewal Works (Hardcover)
Joan Ramon Resina, Christoph Wulf; Contributions by Vincent Barletta, Gunter Blamberger, Christiane Brosius, …
R2,666 Discovery Miles 26 660 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Repetition is constitutive of human life. Both the species and the individual develop through repetition. Unlike simple recall, repetition is permeated by the past and the present and is oriented toward the future. Repetition of central actions and events plays an important role in the lives of individuals and the life of society. It helps to create meaning and memory. Because repetition is a central aspect of human life, it plays a role in all social and cultural spheres. It is important for several branches of the humanities and social studies. This book presents studies of an array of repetitive phenomena and to show that repetition analysis is opening up a new field of study within single disciplines and interdisciplinary research. Recommended for scholars of literature, music, culture, and communication.

Empowering Visions - The Politics of Representation in Hindu Nationalism (Paperback): Christiane Brosius Empowering Visions - The Politics of Representation in Hindu Nationalism (Paperback)
Christiane Brosius
R760 Discovery Miles 7 600 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

Illustrated throughout with over 80 full colour images, Empowering Visions explores the role of images and mass media in Hindutva, the cultural-nationalist movement that moved to the forefront of politics in India in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The author investigates when, why and in what way the moving image, and videos in particular, came to play a central role in the process of self-representation and self-constitution of Hindu nationalist groups and organizations in the overlapping domains of politics, religion and economics. The videos analysed here have been included in massive public political spectacles such as election rallies and patriotic pilgrimages. They have also been employed for in-house indoctrination and emotive mobilization of militant cadres for temporary, often violent, agitation. With the help of these media, different political and cultural-religious organizations, subsumed under the umbrella of Hindutva, have attempted to constitute notions of Indianness as Hinduness, to challenge and provoke both the government in power and specific minority groups such as the Muslims in India. How this was done, who stood behind the making of the videos and how they were made up and distributed, are questions that lie at the heart of this study. At a time when public attention is focused on transnational, and mostly Islamicist movements, "Empowering Visions" argues that both transnationalism and nationalism have to be treated with equal attention, and to some extent ought to be seen as intertwined processes. This book is unique in its presentation and discussion of profound ethnographic data through interviews with a variety of spokesmen for the Hindutva movement. It alsooffers an in-depth analysis of visual and audio-visual material that has so far been unrecognized and unexplored in scholarly works.

R1,948 Discovery Miles 19 480 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This new study looks at the crucial role played by audiovisual media in Hindu cultural nationalism. The application of new media technology in the context of the construction of 'Indianness' by Hindutva's main political wing, the Bharatiya Janata Party (Party of the Indian People, BJP), is a fascinating example of in-house indoctrination and emotive mobilization that demands critical attention. At a time when public attention is focused on transnational, and mostly Islamicist, movements, 'Empowering Visions' argues that both transnationalism and nationalism have to be treated with equal attention, and to some extent ought to be seen as intertwined processes. This book is unique in its presentation and discussion of profound ethnographic data through interviews with a variety of spokesmen for the Hindutva movement.
