What are the barriers to education for internally displaced
persons? How can these be overcome? Drawing on research from a
diverse set of countries, including the the USA, Somalia, Colombia,
Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bosnia and Herzegovina, the contributors
consider the relationship between education and internally
displaced persons. These case studies raise fundamental questions
regarding the barriers to education and some unexpected benefits
for displaced children. The dynamics that impact access and quality
of education for internally displaced people are examined and the
role education can play in rebuilding societies and strengthening
peace building processes is considered. Each case study brings to
light a different aspect of displacement including various causes:
current legal protection and its implications for government action
and practical responses; challenges arising from country contexts
related to the scale and duration of displacement; and the role of
education in meeting the needs of returnees.

Demonstrating the ways in which work in a broad range of fields can
be pulled together in the analysis of conflict, this book provides
the reader with a general introduction to the principles of
conflict analysis and lays a methodological foundation for the
further development of the interdisciplinary field of peace
science. The text begins with an extensive survey of arms race
models, from the classic Richardson model to models exploring the
effects of factors such as the domestic and international economic
environment, public opinion and party politics, and weapons
technology and information development. The processes of individual
and group problem-solving, in both crisis and non-crisis
conditions, are examined, drawing on work in economics, operations
research, cognitive science, and artificial intelligence. Building
on this diverse body of work, the author moves on to develop a
framework for conflict management with which to approach a variety
of conflict situations and applies this procedure to the United
States-Soviet arms control conflict. Walter Isard is cited by Mark
Blaug as one of the Great Economists Since Keynes (CUP, 1989 paper
edition).
Old St Peter's Basilica in Rome stood for over eleven centuries
until it was demolished to make room for today's church on the same
Vatican site. Its last eyewitness, Maffeo Vegio, explained to the
Roman hierarchy how revival of the papacy, whose prestige after the
exile to Avignon had been diminished, was inseparable from a
renewed awareness of the primacy of Peter's Church. To make his
case, Vegio wrote a history founded on credible written and visual
evidence. The text guides us through the building's true story in
its material reality, undistorted by medieval guides. This was its
living memory and a visualization of the continuity of Roman
history into modern times. This volume makes available the first
complete English translation of Vegio's text. Accompanied by
full-color digital reconstructions of the Basilica as it appeared
in Vegio's day.

Batterer intervention programs are an integral part of any
comprehensive approach to domestic violence. However, because
intervention programs are relatively new, there is a need for
increased communication between programming providers and criminal
justice professionals. The latest publication in NIJ's Issues and
Practices series, Batterer Intervention: Program Approaches and
Criminal Justice Strategies provides judges, prosecutors, and
probation officers with the information they need to better
understand batterer intervention and make appropriate decisions
regarding programming.
Nursing is a global, dynamic and changing profession in which there
is a substantial and important area of literature which charts
nursing knowledge and theory. Through study of the topic it is
possible to discern clear phases and themes in this development and
to capture the debates as to how this knowledge influences and
shapes nursing practice. These three volumes will cover the scope
of international publications in nursing knowledge, models and
theories and take a critical, retrospective review of these works.
The volumes encompass empirical and conceptual works and will cover
significant knowledge and key debates in the field, as well as
including more contemporary works to signal future trends.
The collection is categorised and sorted thematically into three
volumes to enable clear navigation and understanding of the
material, and an introduction written by the editors frames the
set, providing guidance and context.
We're always being told to travel 'responsibly', but how exactly do
you do that? OK we all know you shouldn't slog it up the motorway
in a gas-guzzler, but is it better to cross the Channel by train or
by ferry? Is it better to take a low-consumption car with four
people in it, or to catch the train? When it comes to holidays, is
it better to holiday somewhere well visited? The Green Travel Guide
answers your questions whether you're travelling in the UK or
beyond, for work or on holiday. It's full of practical help and
suggestions and covers: Greener ways of getting around day-to-day;
How to save on business travel; Eco-friendly ways to travel abroad;
Carbon offsetting schemes; Great destinations for guilt-free green
holidays. You'll even find a 'green travel calculator' to see how
eco-friendly your holiday really is. Paul Jenner and Christine
Smith are professional travel journalists and writers. They have
written two books on the environment, The Environmental Business
Handbook and The World Environmental Business Handbook (both
published by Euromonitor) as well as a special report for the
Economist Intelligence Unit The Tourism Industry And The
Environment. Paul Jenner was a contributor to Vole, the seminal
environmental magazine of the 70s, and has written for many outdoor
magazines including TGO (The Great Outdoors).
