Consolationscapes in the Face of Loss - Grief and Consolation in Space and Time (Paperback): Christoph Jedan, Avril Maddrell,... Consolationscapes in the Face of Loss - Grief and Consolation in Space and Time (Paperback)
Christoph Jedan, Avril Maddrell, Eric Venbrux
R1,289 Discovery Miles 12 890 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Human beings are grieving animals. 'Consolation', or an attempt to assuage grief, is an age-old response to loss which has various expressions in different cultural contexts. Over the past century, consolation has dropped off the West's cultural radar. The contributions to this volume highlight this neglect of consolation in popular and academic discourses and explore the usefulness of the concept of consolation for analysing spatio-temporal constellations. Consolationscapes in the Face of Loss brings together scholars from geography, philosophy, history, anthropology and religious studies. The chapters use spatial and conceptual mappings of grief and consolation to analyse a range of spaces and phenomena around grief, bereavement and remembrance, comfort and resilience, including battlefield memorials, crematoria, graveyards and natural burial sites in Europe. Authors shift the discussion beyond the Global North by including responses to traumatic grief in post-conflict African societies, as well as Australian Aboriginal traditions of ritual consolation. The book focuses on the relationship between space/place and consolation. In so doing, it offers a new lens for research on death, grief and bereavement. It offers new insights for students and researchers interrogating contemporary bereavement, as well as those interested in meaning-making, emerging socio-cultural practices and their role in personal and collective resilience.

Christoph Jedan
R654 Discovery Miles 6 540 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In Western public discourse, there is a long tradition of opposing secular and religious values. In consequence, religion has been increasingly excluded from the public domain and relegated to the realm of personal motivation. From different perspectives, this present collection of essays shows that religion still has an important role to play in the public domain. In exploring the possibility of a rapprochement between religious and secular values, the book's contributions offer important insights for ongoing debates on the question whether Western, and particularly European, democracies have entered a "post-secular" phase. R6,712 Discovery Miles 67 120 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Stoic Virtues - Chrysippus and the Religious Character of Stoic Ethics (Hardcover): Christoph Jedan Stoic Virtues - Chrysippus and the Religious Character of Stoic Ethics (Hardcover)
Christoph Jedan
R5,829 Discovery Miles 58 290 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Like its ancient rivals, Stoic ethics was a form of virtue ethics, yet while the concept of virtue was clearly central to Stoic ethics, the concept of Stoic virtue has not yet been fully explored. Instead, the existing literature tends to impose on the Stoic material philosophically quite alien non-Aristotelian interpretations of virtue. According to Christoph Jedan, however, a thorough examination of the Stoic concept of virtue leads to a reassessment of our understanding of Stoic ethics. This book emphasises in particular the theological underpinning of Stoic ethics, which Jedan contends has been underestimated in current accounts of Stoic ethics. Jedan argues that the theological motifs in Stoic ethics are in fact pivotal to a complete understanding of Stoic ethics. The book focuses on Chrysippus, the most important of the early Stoic thinkers, suggesting that his contribution, and in particular its religious aspect, remained a key point of reference for later Stoics. This fascinating book makes a crucial contribution to the field of ancient ethics.>
