broad audience of researchers and students who are interested in
questions of structure formation in complex systems in nature and
society. When we think of synergetics, impressive images of complex
structures immediately come to mind. Such images serve us as
starting point and guide for understanding structure formation in
chemical, biological, physical, geological, and social systems.
Many fascinating pictures of new experimental results illustrate
the imagery of synergetics and at the same time enable precise
statements about the underlying laws based on precise and discussed
measurements. In this way, for example, the famous Runge pictures
are accessible to a physico-chemical description, and it turns out
that the well-known disintegration of the beer foam satisfies a
consecutive kinetics with feedback. The modeling by means of
cellular automata and iterated function systems enables us to study
the cooperative character of pattern formation on sea shells on the
one hand but also to show that creativity is a cooperative

This book and its associated appendixes compile and synthesise the
results of a comprehensive literature and Internet search. The
literature search was undertaken to uncover information regarding
the effects of off-highway vehicle (OHV) use on land health, or
"natural resource attributes", and included databases archiving
information from before OHVs came into existence to May 2006.
Information pertaining to socioeconomic implications of OHV
activities is included as well. The literature and Internet
searches yielded approximately 700 peer-reviewed papers, magazine
articles, agency and non-governmental reports, and internet
websites regarding effects of OHV use as they relate to the Bureau
of Land Management's (BLM) standards of land health. Discussions
regarding OHV effects are followed by brief syntheses of potential
indicators of OHV effects, as well as OHV-effects mitigation,
site-restoration techniques, and research needs.
Second only to Rome in the ancient world, Alexandria was home to
many of late antiquity's most brilliant writers, philosophers, and
theologians -- among them Philo, Origen, Arius, Athanasius,
Hypatia, Cyril, and John Philoponus. Now, in Alexandria in Late
Antiquity, Christopher Haas offers the first book to place these
figures within the physical and social context of Alexandria's
bustling urban milieu.
Because of its clear demarcation of communal boundaries,
Alexandria provides the modern historian with an ideal opportunity
to probe the multicultural makeup of an ancient urban unit. Haas
explores the broad avenues and back alleys of Alexandria's
neighborhoods, its suburbs and waterfront, and aspects of material
culture that underlay Alexandrian social and intellectual life.
Organizing his discussion around the city's religious and ethnic
blocs -- Jews, pagans, and Christians -- he details the fiercely
competitive nature of Alexandrian social dynamics. In contrast to
recent scholarship, which cites Alexandria as a model for peaceful
coexistence within a culturally diverse community, Haas finds that
the diverse groups' struggles for social dominance and cultural
hegemony often resulted in violence and bloodshed -- a volatile
situation frequently exacerbated by imperial intervention on one
side or the other.
Eventually, Haas concludes, Alexandrian society achieved a
certain stability and reintegration -- a process that resulted in
the transformation of Alexandrian civic identity during the crucial
centuries between antiquity and the Middle Ages.
