The landscape of cardiac surgery is changing, as is the field of interventional cardiology. The idea of accessing and replacing a failing valve through the patients vasculature has become the most rapidly expanding therapy of choice in cardiovascular disease. Transcatheter Valve Therapies chronicles the astonishing advances that have taken place in the field and prepares readers for the challenging future of cardiac valve therapies. Designed to meet the growing needs of cardiologists, cardiac surgeons, anesthetists, and general practitioners, the book covers all aspects from logistic needs to clinical outcomes. It provides a comprehensive overview of transcatheter valve therapies and the necessary understanding for a successful clinical introduction at individual institutions. Topics include: Epidemiologic considerations Aspects of balloon aortic valvuloplasty as a stand-alone procedure or as part of the transcatheter valve replacement The history of how transcatheter valve therapies were implemented into surgical practice New imaging modalities The particularities of transcatheter access Aortic root anatomy Emerging technologies and future design improvements Development steps of aortic devices and potential solutions for transcatheter tricuspid, mitral, and pulmonary valve replacement The rigorous testing requirements for endovascular medical devices Clinical results of aortic transcatheter valve therapies in easy accessible text and table formats The future of transcatheter valve therapies All topics are discussed based on the author's own clinical and experimental experience in the field. This volume is essential for anyone involved in transcatheter valve implantation, clinicians wishing to become more involved in improving transcatheter valve therapies, and researchers engaged in building and creating new medical technologies to shape the cardiovascular landscape of the future.

This book, the last in a series of eight proceedings volumes, presents an up-to-date overview on immunology and inflammation based on a congress held in Budapest, Hungary in April 1998. It is divided into the following sections: Basic Mechanisms, Endo- and Exotoxins, Soluble Receptors, and Treatment Perspectives.
This is the seventh symposium in a series of symposia on immunology organized by IMMUNO covering this time vaccination. This volume deals with antigen-host interaction and hepatitis immunisation, novel vaccine concepts and technologies, and vaccines for the twenty-first century.
This is the sixth symposium in a series of symposia on immunology organized by IMMUNO covering this time tumor immunology. This volume deals with T cell recognition and CD95-associating signaling, clinical investigations: cells, costimulatory signals and therapeutic approaches: cytokines and vaccines.
In this book the most important papers presented at the 5th Symposium in Immunology, held April 7 - 8, 1995 in Strasbourg, France, are published. Theses papers are from leading experts in the fields covering topics ranging from basic mechanisms, such as the molecular anatomy of autoimmune diseases, to data relevant to the modern diagnosis, therapy, treatment, and prevention of viral infections. By collecting such a wide-range of papers the organizers of the meeting succeeded in compiling an integrated overview of current research, clinical studies, epidemiological data, and their interrelationship.
This is the fourth of a series of Symposia in Immunology which were organized to bring important new information on the expanding field of immunology to practicing physicians interested in the field. Highly renowned basic scientists share their results with physicians conducting clinical research and those experienced in the treatment of the respective diseases. This series of symposia is planned to cover different areas of immunology and will help to close the gap between special achievements of scientists and practicing physicians.

The AProse LancelotA still represents a major challenge for research on medieval literature. The Middle High German romance is a translation of an Old French original that may have been transmitted via a Dutch interim version. Accordingly, the romance has to be read in the context of French, Dutch, and German literary history. In Germany the reception of the ALancelot en proseA related to its modern prose form, while in the Netherlands it was also translated/reworked as a romance in verse. Given all this, the study of the work can only be properly undertaken on an interdisciplinary basis. This volume contains the contributions to the Lancelot conference in TA1/4bingen in September 2004. Specialists in German Studies, Romance Studies, and Dutch Studies examine the work both from literary and a language-historical perspectives. The articles concentrate on the following subjects: (1) translation practice and prose style, (2) narrative strategies and the constitution of meaning, (3) transmission and impact.
This volume dedicated to Walter Haug contains 23 papers by medievalists who have worked with him in TA1/4bingen. The topics covered range across the heroic epic, the courtly romance, mysticism (with two first editions), narrative literature in the Late Middle Ages and the aftermath of medieval literature in the Early Renaissance, Baroque and present-day writing, together with the interface between literature, philosophy and religion. The papers take up central themes in Walter Hauga (TM)s research and carry them forward. With its mix of close philological textual study and theoretical reflection the volume opens up new paths to understanding medieval literature.
The 16 articles in this volume examine interlinkings between religious and secular diction and thought-forms in the literature of the Middle Ages and the Reformation. Though wide-ranging in their methodologies they are united in the sometimes unexpected historical and systematic commonalities they detect in texts of different genres and periods. Together they take up a familiar but hitherto inadequately clarified problem and place it in the context of ongoing debate on the appropriate understanding of medieval literature and culture.
In the last decades, violent non-state actors (VNSAs) such as rebel and terrorist organizations have proved their capacity to break international law. The international community, particularly the United Nations (UN), has reacted to this development by redirecting its conflict resolution efforts to these non-state entities. This has turned targeted sanctions into one of the most vital and indispensable foreign policy tools available to the UN Security Council in combating terrorism and contributing to the peaceful resolution of (intra-state) conflicts. Despite the UN Security Council's growing tendency to sanction VNSAs, there has been little research analyzing the effects of UN targeted sanctions on these non-government actors. This book seeks to fill this gap and shifts the focus on non-state actors by ascertaining the general mechanisms through and conditions under which UN targeted sanctions imposed on VNSAs tend to be effective. The tripartite empirical analysis combining quantitative and qualitative research methods demonstrates that the state-centric understanding of how sanctions work is not simply applicable to the effective sanctioning of violent non-state actors such as rebel and terrorist movements.

Dominik Graf, an exception in the film/television business, is a man of many parts. This is precisely what makes him so fascinating. He is a genre filmmaker, who guilefully attained freedom from within the rigid confines of television, and wrote (German) TV history with his episodes of "Der Fahnder" and "Tatort." His sole commercial hit in theatres, "Die Katze," has developed into a veritable "generational text." He is an auteur filmmaker in the spirit of the nouvelle vague or New Hollywood, who made waves with such masterpieces as "Spieler," " Der Felsen," "Die Freunde der Freunde," or "Das Gel?bde." He is also a wonderful writer on film -- and a polemical commentator of recent German history. However, these parts cannot be separated so clearly, something which this book explains through an essay by Christoph Huber, an richly annotated filmography by Olaf M?ller and an in-depth interview with Dominik Graf by both authors.
