'It is personal to every reader, it will become for every one a
reflection of himself. I fancy that here, as always where work is
fine and true, the author has created something not as he would but
as he must, and here an interpreter of a world more wonderful than
he himself knows.' Hugh Walpole
Includes "An Oxford Symbol," "Scapegoats," "To a New Yorker a
Hundred Years Hence," "A Call of the Author," "Mr. Pepy's
Christmases," and many more stories.

Pook Press celebrates the great Golden Age of Illustration in
children's literature. Many of the earliest children's books,
particularly those dating back to the 1850s and before, are now
extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. Pook Press are working
to republish these classic works in affordable, high quality,
colour editions, using the original text and artwork so these works
can delight another generation of children. Arthur Rackham
(1867-1939) was one of the premier illustrators of the early 20th
Century. He illustrated many books, the first of which was
published in 1893. Throughout his career he had developed a very
individual style that is was to influence a whole generation of
children, artists and other illustrators. His haunting humour and
dreamlike romance adds to the enchantment and fantasy of children's
literature.

"Her life was a bridge from the nineteenth century to the
twentieth, from the time-hallowed beauty and rigidity of a samurai
household to the disorienting, forward-looking freedoms of the
West." --Janice P. Nimura, from the foreword. This is the story of
one woman's remarkable life successfully navigating two very
different cultures--the first memoir of an Asian-American woman.
Beautifully told, this immigrant's account of an unforgettable
journey is the story of a headstrong and empowered woman--a loyal
wife, a widowed mother and a bilingual breadwinner--finding her way
and finding her voice in a strange new world. Follow in her
footsteps and trace the remarkable trajectory of her life as she:
Witnesses her father prepare and perform the ritual seppuku and her
mother burn down the family home Bids an emotional farewell and
sails across the ocean to marry a wealthy merchant in a new land
Returns to Tokyo with her two daughters and mother-in-law, only to
find her homeland just as alien as America, forcing her to reinvent
herself again in order to provide for her family Returns to America
with her children following the death of her mother-in-law An
international bestseller when it was first published a century ago,
A Daughter of the Samurai emerges as a rare testament to a singular
woman's resolve, strength and endurance. This edition features a
new foreword by 2022 Pulitzer Prize finalist Janice P. Nimura.
A toast proposed at the Johnson Birthday Celebration held at the
Three Crowns Inn, Lichfield, in September, 1906. In rising to
propose this toast I cannot ignore what must be in many of your
minds, the recollection that last year it was submitted by a very
dear friend of my own, who, alas has now gone to his rest, I mean
Dr. Richard Garnett. {3} Many of you who heard him in this place
will recall, with kindly memories, that venerable scholar. I am one
of those who, in the interval have stood beside his open grave; and
I know you will permit me to testify here to the fact that rarely
has such brilliant scholarship been combined with so kindly a
nature, and with so much generosity to other workers in the
literary field. One may sigh that it is not possible to perpetuate
for all time for the benefit of others the vast mass of learning
which such men as Dr. Garnett are able to accumulate. One may
lament even more that one is not able to present in some concrete
form, as an example to those who follow, his fine qualities of
heart and mind-his generous faculty for 'helping lame dogs over
stiles.'
