Acting Comedy (Hardcover): Christopher Olsen Acting Comedy (Hardcover)
Christopher Olsen
R3,873 Discovery Miles 38 730 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Despite being roundly cited as much harder to perform than its dramatic counterpart, comic acting is traditionally seen as a performance genre that can't be taught. At best it is often described as a skill that can only be learned "on the job" through years of practice, or given to a performer through natural talent. Acting Comedy is an effort to examine this idea more rigorously by looking at different aspects of the comic actor's craft. Each chapter is written by an expert in a particular form-from actors and directors to teachers and standup comedians. Topics covered include: how performers work with audiences how comic texts can be enhanced through word and musical rhythm analysis how physical movements can generate comic moments and build character. This book is an invaluable resource for any performer focusing on the minute details of comic acting, even down to exactly how one delivers a joke on stage. Christopher Olsen's unique collection of comic voices will prove essential reading for students and professionals alike.

Myth Performance in the African Diasporas - Ritual, Theatre, and Dance (Hardcover): Benita Brown, Dannabang Kuwabong,... Myth Performance in the African Diasporas - Ritual, Theatre, and Dance (Hardcover)
Benita Brown, Dannabang Kuwabong, Christopher Olsen
R1,865 Discovery Miles 18 650 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Diaspora studies continue to expand in range and scope and remain fertile terrain for investigating multiple techniques of myth creation in dance performance, history as performance, dramatic narrative, and staged rituals in the field. Similarly, research in postcoloniality, gender/sexuality, intercultural, and literary studies, among others, all engage and feature core components of performance and myth in articulating and understanding their fields. This sharing of similar components also demonstrates the interrelatedness of these fields. In Myth Performance in the African Diasporas: Ritual, Theatre, and Dance, the authors contend that performance traditions across artistic disciplines reveal a shared if sometimes varied journey among diasporic artists to reconnect with their African ancestors. The volume begins with a historical and aesthetic overview of how dramatists, choreographers, and performance artists have approached the task of interpreting African myth. The individual chapters reveal how specific artists, dramatists, and choreographers have interpreted African myth and what performative approaches and traditions they have used. Focusing on theatre practitioners from the nineteenth century through the present, the authors examine performative traditions from Canada, the United States, the Caribbean, and Latin America. Drawing upon research in theatre, dance, and literary texts, Myth Performance in the African Diasporas will be crucial to academics interested in African performance viewed through the prism of myth making and spiritual/ritualistic stagings. Besides those interested in diasporic studies, this book will also be useful to scholars and students of history, drama, theatre, and dance.

Off-Off Broadway - The Second Wave: 1968-1980 (Paperback): Christopher Olsen Off-Off Broadway - The Second Wave: 1968-1980 (Paperback)
Christopher Olsen
R513 Discovery Miles 5 130 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book provides a glimpse into the terrain of what was called Off-Off Broadway during the 1970s in New York. It focuses on a 12-year period beginning in 1968 when the number of Off-Off Broadway theatres grew exponentially and produced many thousands of plays all across the five boroughs of New York City. Using many interviews from theatre practitioners of that time, Christopher Olsen has captured the intensity of struggling actors, directors, playwrights, and producers who tried to create theatre in extremely difficult circumstances. These theatre practitioners remember an era of intense creativity, excitement and fun, frustration, and endurance. It was indeed a fervent era of wide-ranging experimentation and innovation which has greatly influenced American theatre ever since. Many of these theatre artists continued their careers on Broadway, in regional theatre, on television, and in feature films but still vividly remember the Spartan circumstances of producing theatre for a few dollars and earning almost nothing. Their stories are now being told in this book with about 40 theatres being profiled and dozens of others referred to. The book includes a comprehensive appendix of most of the Off-Off Broadway theatres from the 1970s. It contains photos, production histories, and many quotations from theatre practitioners from that exciting time.
