Popular Culture and Nationalism in Lebanon - The Fairouz and Rahbani Nation (Paperback): Christopher Stone Popular Culture and Nationalism in Lebanon - The Fairouz and Rahbani Nation (Paperback)
Christopher Stone
R1,417 Discovery Miles 14 170 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Based on an award-winning thesis, this volume is a pioneering study of musical theatre and popular culture and its relation to the production of identity in Lebanon in the second half of the twentieth century. In the aftermath of the departure of the French from Lebanon and the civil violence of 1958, the Rahbani brothers (Asi and Mansour) staged a series of folkloric musical theatrical extravaganzas at the annual Ba'labakk festival which highlighted the talents of Asi's wife, the Lebanese diva Fairouz, arguably the most famous living Arab singer. The inclusion of these folkloric vignettes into the festival's otherwise European dominated cultural agenda created a powerful nation-building combination of what Partha Chatterjee calls the 'appropriation of the popular' and the 'classicization of tradition.' The Rahbani project coincides with the confluence of increasing internal and external migration in Lebanon, as well as with the rapid development of mass media technology, of which the Ba'labakk festival can be seen as an extension. Employing theories of nationalism, modernity, globalism and locality, this book shows that these factors combined to give the project a potent identity-forming power. Popular Culture and Nationalism in Lebanon is the first study of Fairouz and the Rahbani family in English and will appeal to students and researchers in the field of Middle East studies, Popular culture and musical theatre.

Interpreting and the Politics of Recognition (Hardcover): Lorraine Leeson, Christopher Stone Interpreting and the Politics of Recognition (Hardcover)
Lorraine Leeson, Christopher Stone; Series edited by Jenny Williams
R4,064 Discovery Miles 40 640 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Interpreting and the Politics of Recognition investigates the historical, ethical and professional dimensions of this, arguably, most widespread form of intercultural communication. Covering key topics from colonialism to representation, ethics and power, it looks at the different linguistic modalities (signed and spoken) used within communities to investigate equality of citizens. The contributors include leading authorities in their fields and use a wide spread of examples from a variety of disparate cultures - including deaf and ethnic minority groups. With eight chapters presented in three thematic sections and a foreword by Michael Cronin setting the book in its wider context, this volume will be of interest to practising interpreters, researchers and advanced students in the areas of Interpreting Studies, Translation Studies, and Linguistics and Communication Studies. Additional resources for Translation and Interpreting Studies are available on the Routledge Translation Studies Portal: http://cw.routledge.com/textbooks/translationstudies.

The Academic Foundations of Interpreting Studies - An Introduction to Its Theories (Hardcover): Cynthia Roy, Jeremy Brunson,... The Academic Foundations of Interpreting Studies - An Introduction to Its Theories (Hardcover)
Cynthia Roy, Jeremy Brunson, Christopher Stone
R1,871 Discovery Miles 18 710 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The Academic Foundations of Interpreting Studies is the first introductory course book that explores the theoretical foundations used in sign language interpreting studies. Authors Roy, Brunson, and Stone examine the disciplines whose theoretical frameworks and methodologies have influenced the academic study of interpreting. With this text, explanations for how interpreted events occur, how interpreted products are created, and how the interpreting process is studied can be framed within a variety of theoretical perspectives, forming a foundation for the emerging transdiscipline of Interpreting Studies. As sign language interpreting has emerged and evolved in the last 20 years as an academic field of study, the scope of learning has broadened to include fields beyond the language and culture of deaf people. This text surveys six disciplines that have informed the study of sign language interpreting: history, translation, linguistics, sociology, social psychology, and cognitive psychology, along with their major ideas, principal scholars, and ways of viewing human interaction. Each chapter includes clear learning goals, definitions, discussion questions, and images to aid understanding. The Academic Foundations of Interpreting Studies is required reading for upper-level undergraduate or first-year graduate students in interpreting, Deaf studies, and sign language programs.

Evidence-based medicine is now firmly established in the lexicon of modern health care. In "The Evidence for Plastic Surgery" the diverse spectrum of plastic surgical practice is called to account by a cross-examination of the available evidence in support of many of the common treatment protocols and surgical procedures in everyday use. The result is a text that makes an important contribution to some of the contentious debates within the speciality and details the critical appraisal of new or developing techniques. This is a unique and invaluable reference source for senior doctors and for those in training, not only in plastic surgery but also in a variety of other closely aligned specialities including general and orthopaedic surgery.
