This book presents research-based investigations of the communicative aspects of Barack Obamaâs presidency, with a focus on ethnicity, gender, and culture as they interact with communication. It examines Obamaâs rhetorical strengths, that also inform his visual rhetorical control, and looks beyond Obamaâs messaging to examine how the news framed his presidency. The book opens by exploring the racio-rhetorical humour applied by President Obama during his presidency. Chapters investigate topics such as Obamaâs use of visual rhetoric, how the media framed Obama using racialized lens, and offer iconographical analysis of satires featured in The New Yorker that symbolized the politics of racial fear erupting prior to the start of Obamaâs presidency. They also examine how the White House used YouTube messaging to rebuild the first lady Michelle Obamaâs image in ways that became acceptable to a wider American public, Obamaâs rhetorical struggles to work within tensions created by the intersection of race and violence and analyze President Obamaâs speeches at Tribal Nations Conferences. It offers research-based investigations of the communicative aspects of Trumpâs presidency, with a focus on race, immigration, xenophobia, and social conflicts as they interact with communication. The book utilizes research data to capture critical moments of the presidency. Chapters examine metadiscourse during President Trumpâs press events, where he accused the media of âNasty Questionâ and âFake Newsâ, offer computational framing analysis to expose the communication of racism and xenophobia in US-Mexico cross-border wall discourses, and provide critical textual analysis of select episodes of CWâs critically acclaimed TV show Jane the Virgin, exposing how citizenship, or lack thereof shapes oneâs relationship to the state and surrounding communities. They also offer textual analysis to demonstrate how a predominantly White newsroom differs from a newsroom that is racially diverse, against the backdrop of the coverage of two politically charged issues of Black Lives Matter and Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), and explore interdisciplinary concepts related to understanding immigrantsâ and sojournersâ believability evaluation of disinformation. This book brings ethnicities into focus by presenting contemporary ethnic discourses that capture and highlight disjuncture within the concept of the idealized âglobalizingâ world. In recent years and despite many writings about globalization and the melding of differences, there remain strong forces that continue to exacerbate ethnic differences in communication as well as other important areas. This book explores various aspects of intranational elite football in Africa, drawing on the expertise of notable scholars from across the world. Africa's Elite Football focuses on an area largely ignored by current scholarship on African football, where interest has focused on international migration. In exploring the intranational, the book is written in two parts. The first is a general focus on the continent, and the second is an examination of country cases. The general focus of the book is on the nature of elite tier leagues, the relationship between politics and football, the media, youth academies, intranational migration and fans. Notably, chapters on topics such as intranational migration present groundbreaking scholarship in this area. Currently, football discourses on migration focus on international migration of footballers, yet the majority of migration in African football is intranational. Thus, by addressing the intranational, this book brings attention to an area that is underrepresented in the current academic discourse. The second part of the book, which focuses on country cases, covers Botswana, Egypt, Kenya, Nigeria, Senegal, Zambia and Zimbabwe. The topics explored in those cases include religiosity, health, women's football, media and management. The coverage of health-related issues is particularly important given that several books on African football rarely broach such a topic. With its unique approach to African football, this book will be of interest to scholars and students of sports history, African studies, politics in sports and African sports.

Onwumechili provides an exciting perspective on African military coups and reminds us that democracy is not synonymous solely with Western societies. He examines democracies in traditional Africa and shows how these socieites clearly defined and limited the roles of traditional African armies. Re-imagining Development Communication in Africa is organized into three sections or parts, the first focusing on the past and the history of development communication scholarship; the second analyzes theoretical issues, and finally a third section that looks at country cases. The first part provides several perspectives on the historical development of the field as it pertains to Africa. Some of these look at ideological, indigenous contributions, and the particular importance of gender issues. The second section provides a critique of development communication theory and provides a more cultural appropriate alternative. Additionally, the book applies existing theory to practice in African communities. This leads to the third section of the book which focuses on development communication in some country cases such as in Cameroon, Kenya, Nigeria, and Rwanda.
