The Routledge Handbook of Urban Studies in Latin America and the Caribbean - Cities, Urban Processes, and Policies (Hardcover):... The Routledge Handbook of Urban Studies in Latin America and the Caribbean - Cities, Urban Processes, and Policies (Hardcover)
Jesus M Gonzalez-Perez, Clara Irazabal, Ruben C. Lois-Gonzalez
R6,188 Discovery Miles 61 880 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This handbook presents the great contemporary challenges facing cities and urban spaces in Latin America and the Caribbean. The content of this multidisciplinary book is organized into four large sections focusing on the histories and trajectories of urban spatial development, inequality and displacement of urban populations, contemporary debates on urban policies, and the future of the city in this region. Scholars of diverse origins and specializations analyze Latin American and Caribbean cities showing that, despite their diversity, they share many characteristics and challenges and that there is value in systematizing this knowledge to both understand and explain them better and to promote increasing equity and sustainability. The contributions in this handbook enhance the theoretical, empirical and methodological study of urbanization processes and urban policies of Latin America and the Caribbean in a global context, making it an important reference for scholars across the world. The book is designed to meet the interdisciplinary study and consultation needs of undergraduate and graduate students of architecture, urban design, urban planning, sociology, anthropology, political science, public administration, and more.

Transbordering Latin Americas - Liminal Places, Cultures, and Powers (T)Here (Hardcover, New): Clara Irazabal Transbordering Latin Americas - Liminal Places, Cultures, and Powers (T)Here (Hardcover, New)
Clara Irazabal
R4,321 Discovery Miles 43 210 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book examines transborder Latin American sociocultural and spatial conditions across the globe and at different scales, from gendered and racialized individuals to national and transnational organizations. Gathering scholars from the "spatial sciences"-architecture, urban design, urban planning, and geography-as well as sociology, anthropology, history, and economics, the volume explores these transbordering practices of place making and community building across cultural and nation-state borders, examining different agents (individuals, ethnic and cultural groups, NGOs, government agencies) that are engaged in transnational/transborder living and city-making practices, reconceiving notions of state, identity, and citizenship and showing how subjected populations resist, adapt, or coproduce transnational/transborder projects and, in the process, help shape and are shaped as transborder subjects.

Ordinary Places/Extraordinary Events - Citizenship, Democracy and Public Space in Latin America (Hardcover): Clara Irazabal Ordinary Places/Extraordinary Events - Citizenship, Democracy and Public Space in Latin America (Hardcover)
Clara Irazabal
R3,892 Discovery Miles 38 920 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Clara IrazAbal and her contributors explore the urban history of some of Latin Americaa (TM)s great cities through studies of their public spaces and what has taken place there. The avenues and plazas of Mexico City, Havana, Santo Domingo, Caracas, BogotaAŹ, SaAžo Paulo, Lima, Santiago, and Buenos Aires have been the backdrop for extraordinary, history-making events. While some argue that public spaces are a prerequisite for the expression, representation and reinforcement of democracy, they can equally be used in the pursuit of totalitarianism. Indeed, public spaces, in both the past and present, have been the site for the contestation by ordinary people of various stances on democracy and citizenship. By exploring the use and meaning of public spaces in Latin American cities, this book sheds light on contemporary definitions of citizenship and democracy in the Americas.

City Making and Urban Governance in the Americas - Curitiba and Portland (Paperback): Clara Irazabal City Making and Urban Governance in the Americas - Curitiba and Portland (Paperback)
Clara Irazabal
R1,496 Discovery Miles 14 960 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Cities in both North and South America are confronting tremendous challenges in urban growth and management as they enter the new century. Curitiba in Brazil and Portland in Oregon, US are cities that have achieved recognition for exemplary urban planning programmes over the past three decades. As such, they provide particularly useful illustrations of the intense development pressures that many urban areas currently face. This book explores the dynamics of their urban governance, arguing that, in general, there has been a unique synergy derived from the combination of visionary leadership, innovative urban plans and effective citizen involvement. The book argues that, while urban design and architecture are key to the success in making cities livable and in augmenting the global reputations, such sensitive, innovative urban planning and design projects first need to be governed effectively and grounded within the specifics of their local cultures and existing built environments.

Ordinary Places/Extraordinary Events - Citizenship, Democracy and Public Space in Latin America (Paperback): Clara Irazabal Ordinary Places/Extraordinary Events - Citizenship, Democracy and Public Space in Latin America (Paperback)
Clara Irazabal
R1,499 Discovery Miles 14 990 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book reveals the recent urban history of nine major Latin American cities - Mexico City, Havana, Santo Domingo, Caracas, Bogota, Sao Paulo, Lima, Santiago, and Buenos Aires - through studies of their public spaces and the events that have taken place there. The case studies provide an unprecedented opportunity to look at cities with comparable cultural and political histories, and to investigate the use and meaning of urban space by ordinary people in extraordinary, history-making events. While some argue that public spaces are a prerequisite for the expression, representation and reinforcement of democracy, equally they can be said to be used in the pursuit of totalitarianism. In Latin America, there have been the experiences of the Santiago of Pinochet, the Buenos Aires of Videla, the Asuncion of Strossner, or the Caracas of Perez Jimenez, among others. Yet even here political demonstrations in public spaces played a critical role in the eventual revocation of those regimes, and/or in the subsequent re-establishment of democracy. For the two opposing political visions - democracy versus totalitarianism - public streets and spaces, in both the past and present, have been the site for the enactment and contestation of various stances on democracy and citizenship. Indeed, the public sphere, as the intangible realm for the expression, reproduction, and/or recreation of a society's culture and polity, usually encompasses opposing political visions and nurtures acute social confrontations which are played out in tangible space. By exploring the use and meaning of public spaces in Latin American cities over time, the book sheds light on contemporary redefinitions of citizenship and democracy in the Americas, and by extrapolation, the world.
