series on the Civil War compiled from actual reproductions of
articles from Century Magazine, a contemporary periodical of the
era that contains authentic source material on the War Between the
States. Retreat from Gettysburg begins with Bragg's invasion of
Kentucky and ending with the Chattanooga campaign and presents
accounts by General James Longstreet of the Battle of
Fredericksburg and the Gettysburg campaign, by General Ulysses S.
Grant of the Vicksburg campaign, as well as many other eyewitness
reports by high-ranking Union and Confederate officers. Cumberland
Gap, Chancellorsville, Port Hudson, Murfreesboro, Chickamauga-names
that ring with the sound of war-are given their place in military
history. Accompanying these accounts are hundreds of drawings,
