It addresses the cultural and scientific links between Nazi Germany and Southern Europe focusing on a hybrid international environment and an intricate set of objects that include individual, social, cultural or scientific networks and events.

This is a book about the tensions and entangled interactions between internationalism and nationalism, and about the effects both had on European scientific and cultural settings from the mid-nineteenth to the mid-twentieth century. From chemistry to philology the essays tackle different historical case studies exploring how the paths taken by science and culture during the period were affected by nationalism and internationalism.

Os ensaios reunidos neste volume reflectem sobre a angustia da influencia que a Alemanha nacional-socialista sente na sua relacao especifica com os paises da Europa do Sul com quem, a epoca, tem afinidades ideologicas manifestas (Italia, Espanha, Portugal). E fazem-no, num quadro disciplinar polifacetado onde convivem e interagem a politica, a cultura e a ciencia. Nao se trata de analisar a propaganda nacional-socialista ou de reflectir sobre as suas estrategias discursivas e retoricas, mas sim de procurar compreender o que fica aquem e alem do seu discurso: como se caracterizam os contextos locais em que esta retorica se inscreve? Quais as modalidades que essa angustia da influencia alema conheceu ou adoptou? Quais as suas realizacoes efectivas, em termos culturais e cientificos?
